Upscale modern and trendy hotel close to everything, couple of blocks to waterfront restaurants and we felt it was good value for the money

When we arrived at 4pm, we were told that the room wasn't ready. I thought that was a bit poor but then the receptionist said it's actually ready. We were relieved that we can just relax in the room after the long drive. The whole time we were there checking in, the receptionist never smiled or explained any of the hotel
facilities. He just handed out the keys and that was it. Our deal was Bed & Breakfast but he never mentioned about that so we're a bit worried.
Anyway the room was nice and clean and had a tiny balcony. Unfortunately when people below or beside of us were outside and smoked, the smoke came into our room and it wasn't nice. I will avoid the room with the balcony next time.
Breakfast was really nice. So many selection, it was great.
Apart from that receptionist and the smell of tobacco, we had a good stay.

We were in Wellington for the NZ International Arts Festival and decided to stay three nights in this hotel because of its high ratings on Tripadvisor. The quality was indeed high in most respects, clean and well presented; staff at reception friendly and efficient. The suite met expectations, with a very comfortable king bed. The bathroom was dated, but clean and well stocked.
The swimming pool is suitable for three people who wish to swim in lanes; not much space for more. Sauna is kept switched off and can be activated on a time switch, which effectively means its rarely hot enough to be useful. The spa pool was fine, if unexciting.
All of the above would be 'very good', but I have made it only 'average' because of the very inefficient housekeeping. I suspect there were staffing issues.
Our room was not cleaned and made up until lunch time on the first day and had not been done by 3pm on the second day. When we enquired about this we we were told the room would normally have been done 'by 5pm'. In my experience this is too late in the day for a hotel of this price range and level of luxury. Worse, the quality of the attention on both days was lacking: milk was not replenished in the fridge, chocolate in the fridge included an empty wrapper, carpet not vacuum cleaned, toiletries not replenished, bed made up in a cursory way.
When I complained we received a small rebate on the room rate and a bowl of fruit, plus a card hand-written by the duty manager, which was a neat touch.
The message is: this is basically a sound hotel, but standards seem unreliable.

Room Tip: Ask for a harbour view; but avoid top floor at up-wind end of the building when gales are blowing...

We spent just one night here, but would happily have stayed longer. Everything was perfect, especially the room and location. The hotel is right in the City centre and not far from the Ferry terminal, museum, Botanic Garden, etc. Highly recommended.

Thought the hotel seemed a little tired, but it's a great location. Very good breakfast spread; particularly liked the orange/carrot/apple juicer available.

Thank you for your comments and we have just spent a considerable investment in the hotels breakfast offerings. We are getting great feedback on what we are now offering as it is very different from what most Hotels are offering in the marketplace. The Hotel is continually changing and we have over the past 6 months installed new flat screen televisions, wireless internet through out the Hotel, new showerheads, iPod docking stations (commenced and will be finished at the end of March), bathroom blinds, pillows and new irons/ironing boards. We have been listening to feedback on what our guests needs are and have made changes were we believe is most important. I hope you enjoyed your time in New Zealand and hoping that you come back for a return visit

We stayed here en route from North to South island.
The staff on reception were very friendly and helpful.
I had emailed ahead following trip advisor advice to request a complimentary upgrade to a harbour view and was absolutely thrilled when this was followed through to a super room with a great harbour view.
Breakfast was exceptional value.
The evening menu was a bit too fancy but there are cooking facilities in the room and very quickly a light snack prepared and enjoyed.
Very comfortable room and bathroom.
I certainly recommend a stay here .

Room Tip: Seek a complimentary upgrade to harbour view in advance.

Thank you for your comments on Tripadvisor and I hope that you had a great stay in New Zealand. I am happy that there was some availability in the Hotel to offer you an upgrade on your recent stay and you were able to view the Harbour from your room. The Hotel has recently employed Kit Foe, a local Wellington Chef who has been able to transform the dining experience at the Hotel from a Hotel menu to more of a restaurant menu which we are starting to get rave reviews on. Dishes like “Hare Wellington” which is Kit’s take on Beef Wellington have been a favourite. We are in the process of changing all menus throughout the Hotel and as you suggested above the breakfast concept is exceptional. I wish you a great 2012 year
