After checking we were pretty unhappy with the room we were given, facing a grey back street with no view at all. Even though we had paid a low pre-paid rate the guy at the front office happily gave us a room higher up in the building, facing the city. Thanks, it made our stay much nicer.
Standards were generally high in this hotel, which apparently hosted a few of the rugby teams playing the World Cup. It’s clean and comfy but a bit generic, good for business people I suppose. Location is ok, walking distance into city center.

This was a weekend trip to Wellington with 2 teenage boys. Booked online for 4 adults thinking I had booked a 2 bedroom room with 1 double, 2 singles for $178/night but no, it was one (small) room with 2 doubles jammed in. All good the boys ordered pillows & one made up a bed on the floor squashed between the bed & window. They just pretended they were camping. The room was only equipped with towels, glasses etc for 2...when I asked reception, they said oh the rooms were only made for 2 & if I had any complaints I needed to fill a questionnaire ??? I replied 'so even tho I had clearly booked for 4 the kids don't get a towel at least and I really wanted it fixed now as we were staying 2 nights'? As she obviously didn't know how to handle my call I asked for the car to be bought around. Parking is another thing...only valet parking so you can't come & go as you want. you have to call reception to access your car or get it brought around. Online I did enquire if parking was available, which they said it was - not valet parking at $30/day. Anyway, the room was not cleaned with either stockings/undies found under bed and some 'sticky' sunstance in the fridge...oh yes - no tea towels even tho I did request one with the towels etc.....anyway, thank goodness we stay in quite a few places & laughed it off.....THEN our saving grace was Nikki at reception - she took total responsilbility for the room not being made up properly & tried her best to get it sorted. What an asset to the place that girl was! Certainly knows customer service! Plates Restaurant underneath is overpriced & needs a chef that knows how to cook...read my review separately. Wouldn't recommend to stay here at all really. Oh & all of us stubbed our toe on the lip on the bathroom entry at least twice each during the stay - ouch!!

Room Tip: Only have one bedroom units so more than 2 people - order 2!

The 'pillow menu' on your bed would lead you to believe you were staying in a luxery hotel but it's a shame this description doesn't apply to the Rydges. The rooms are comfortable and clean the kitchenette a nice thought but too small to be of much use. The rest of the hotel was quite bland, almost office like in places. Staff were efficient and helpful when required.
The prices for food and drink were expensive so were went elsewhere for these as did most others given how quiet the place was.
The hotel is in a good location for touring being close to the harbourfront, shops and railway station. All are within a few minutes pleasant walk, if it isn't raining.

Room Tip: If you're a light sleeper get a room off the front of the hotel as it's on a busy road.

Stayed here a few weeks ago and had an excellent experience. The rooms are nice and big, the location is perfect and the staff are great. Highly recommended.
