Staglands is a wildlife park in the setting of the stunning Akatarawera Ranges. There is plenty to see and do, with a wide variety of animals and birds, including kea, kaka and others that visitors are unlikely to see in the wild. There are sections with rabbits etc for petting, a turtle pond, fish, and many other animals.

Our kids enjoy exploring the partly restored pioneer village, feeding the animals (especially the deer), cuddling guinea pigs and baby chicks, and exploring the river (while deciding whether to cross by spring bridge or log bridge). The outside area has many lovely spots for picnics, and even on the rainiest day (which is often more rewarding as there are fewer crowds) we love the log cabin cafe, with its roaring fire.

We finally gave in this year and bought an annual pass for the whole family so we can go as often as we like.

We visit Staglands fairly often as the whole family enjoy it. Well priced for a whole days entertainment.Plenty to do and see - animals, birds, historic buildings, country walks and picnics by the river. The kids enjoy the swing bridge and feeding the animals.

We visited Staglands after nearly two decades since the first visit and it has improved enormously. It's in such a beautiful setting, with lots of old rural artifacts, and even those who aren't bothered about petting the animals will enjoy the old buildings set out as in pioneering times. We took a couple of mid-twenties' tourists, one from overseas, and they both loved it. We were all enchanted by the little kunekune piglets, baby goats, and many vibrant peacocks. The 'Secret Garden' is just gorgeous with fluffy bunnies, turtles and goldfish in the ponds, and lots of cooing doves to add to the peaceful atmosphere. On such a sunny day it was great to sit in the sun and totally relax.
The bird aviary is full of lovely birds, and our only disappointment was to not catch sight of the falcon, he was hiding.
General admission is $19 for an adult, $16 a senior citizen, and $8 a child, so I'm not sure how the reviewer below got in for $10 ! A bag of food for the animals is $2. Allow 2 hours, longer if you want to linger down by the river, which is a lovely setting.
A reviewer mentioned leaving before sunset as the road is not the best for driving, but in actual fact it's safer to drive in the dark as you can see the lights from an approaching car. In daylight you can't see the speeding drivers who like to drive down the middle of the road, so beware !
All in all, well worth visiting and not just for the kids ! Thanks, Staglands.
