Take the No.1 bus South to Island Bay, or on a weekday the No'4 around to Owhiro Bay, to walk along the coast path to the Red Rocks. The bus journey itself is interesting as it takes you through the older and run down part of the Capital. There is absolutely nothing to see when you arrive at the teminus but walk West along the Parade and eventually come through the 'quarry gate' that marks the start of the walk. This follows the black sanded beachline for quite a few miles, and on the day I went it was extremely blowy, so do dress up warmly! The red rocks when you get there are extraordinary. Further on there is a seal colony too. The only cencession to any kind of commercialism was the Beach Cafe on the way back in Island Bay, which is excellent. This wilderness is only half an hour of the city and well worth the effort.
