Owner description: Space Place at Carter Observatory offers visitors a state of the art, digital planetarium with an almost limitless range of virtual space journeys, along with multi-media exhibits that tell the Maori and European story of New Zealand's southern skies and the role of the stars in navigation. Space Place re-opened in March 2010 as a world class visitor attraction after a multi-million dollar refit. Over its 70 year history it has served as New Zealand's national observatory and this legacy is reflected in a collection of New Zealand astronomical history, including the oldest telescope of its kind operating in New Zealand. Space Place offers a fun learning experience for kids and visitors of all ages - we hope you'll have a blast! I took my wife and younger siblings. My wife and I ended up buying the annual Star pass thing, so we have already been back a number of times and seen every movie they are currently showing, which cuts the cost down significantly.

The museum section is very fascinating, learning about the universe, and with lots of hands-on stuff.

There is a room you go in, that is done up like you are onboard the 'International Space Station', and other cool things like that.

The 360 degree theatre has to be the highlight. Lying back in your seat, looking up at the screen that covers the entire roof.
One of our favourite movies was the one about the 'Wildest Weather' in the galaxy. It was so amazing, feeling like you were actually landing on these other planets, with weather you wouldn't survive in.

Great place for individuals, couples or families :)

Try and allow more time to also walk around the 'Botanical Gardens' while there. There is also a lookout with amazing views of Wellington City, next to 'Carter Observatory'.

Jac

We know the season "star pass" offers great value for our local visitors and we're thrilled to hear you're making good use of it. It certainly is good value for money and we have so much neat stuff coming up that you'll be getting an even greater return if you come along!

Wow. What a spectacular place. Sooooooooooooooo much information. A few interactive things to do and a "classroom" type setting for young ones to learn. The room where you go to see the night sky and learn a little about the stars etc is a must

This was our first visit to the Observatory, although we've lived here for years. We enjoyed it. The exhibition is interesting and I could go through it again - plenty of interesting content. I particularly liked the library and telescope room - history fans will be fascinated by both. The show was great, as was the tour around the night sky as it currently is. We'll back... for a different show, and for a look through the telescope on a clear night!

Very good, newly installed exhibit where you can see pictures of planets, other galaxies, etc. There's a large telescope, which I wish was open for public use every day. And educational and inspiring movies.
