“Interesting”
Reviewed June 20, 2012

It's hard to make walking through a cemetary an enjoyable experience, but it is on the way to the city centre on the walk back from the Botanic Gardens. There were signposts showing the significant figures buried in the cemetary and it was also possible to tell little things about history just from looking at the dates on the headstones.

“Heavy atmosphere”
Reviewed June 1, 2012

The atmosphere in the Bolton Street Cemetery was heavy and dark. The old gravestones are thick throughout this hilly cemetery, with old trees creating nice shady places. The cemetery is a nice spot to take a walk or contemplate the past. Take a look at the Sexton House in the corner of the cemetery.

“Historic Urban Cemetery”
Reviewed February 21, 2012

As you walk down from the top of the Botanical Garden towards the city center you weave through the Bolton Street Cemetery which dates back to 1840. For 50 years it was administered as three separate cemeteries--Church of England, Jewish, and Public. It's more an interesting, rather large, space. As you get towards the city you come across the Motorway which bisects the cemetery (which necessitated the relocation of about 3,700 burial sites) and requires crossing a bridge to continue to the city center. I wouldn't necessarily make a special trip to Bolton Street, but definitely walk through if you do visit the Botanical Gardens.

“Peaceful urban oasis”
Reviewed February 8, 2012

This historic cemetery has been beautifully preserved, with historic graves, saved from the urban motorway, and beautiful landscaped gardens - an urban oasis and a beautiful place to walk and reflect and explore the past. Walk down through the cemetery from the Botanical Gardens or the top of the cable car, and across the footbridge into the city.

“A good bit of NZ/Wgtn history”
Reviewed February 1, 2012

After doing the Cable Car and the top end of the Botanical Gardens ... I always enjoy having coffee at the Rose Garden and then wandering down the hill through Wellington's oldest cemetary on the way to a tour of Parliament. The things locals do (and enjoy doing).
