The view to the south island and Kaikoura ranges is fantastic on a clear day. The walk up the hill is reasonably gentle and you can make a longer round trip going up the four-wheel drive track behind the memorial and back down to the car park.

A relatively easy climb up the steps/track from the bay or you can get there by coming via Bowes Crescent Strathmore and an easy walk down on a walkway. The views over the south coast are quite stunning especially on a clear sunny day. The Ataturk memorial is quite special. Take the dog for a walk, we did!

This is the only memorial of its kind to a foreign head of government in New Zealand. It is well worth the walk up the hill from near Breaker bay or from the car park in Strathmore. There are however few signs leading to it (those on the coast are only visible once you have pulled over to the little car park). It is very exposed so definitely do not visit in a southerly! But the views on a calm sunny day are magnificent. Ataturk's generous words to his former ANZAC enemies are carved into both this memorial and another at Gallipoli "You, the mothers who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are at peace. After having lost their lives on this land, they have become our sons as well."

The views from the actual memorial and the walks leading off from there towards the harbour are worth all the effort.

I am a local and walk here, but there are also car parks at the top and at the bottom. Park at the top if you want a fairly easy walk. I guess it is about 20 minutes from the car park return. Lovely views over the harbour entrance and across to the south island. I don't have any emotional attachment to the war, so for me the point of coming out here is the view and the exercise if I walk down to the sea and back up the steps to the memorial.
