Owner description: Be embraced by the beauty of this gorgeous wooden cathedral - still sacred, welcoming to all, in the heart of Wellington's heritage precinct. Breathtakingly beautiful - Wellington's famous Old St Paul's, constructed entirely of native timbers, is one of New Zealand's greatest heritage places. Experience the wonderful and sometimes quirky stories of this former cathedral church, its historic location and its people. Gaze at Old St Paul's unique colonial architecture, admire its exquisite embroidered furnishings and be awed by the colours of its beautiful stained glass windows. It is a magnificent example of timber Gothic Revival architecture. Visit the Gift and all-year-around Christmas Shop at Old St Paul's, which features exquisite gifts, NZ keepsakes and beautiful Christmas decorations, advent calendars and nativity scenes. There is something to suit every taste. The site where Old St Paul's stands was formerly part of Pipitea Pa. For almost 100 years, Old St Paul's served as the parish church of Thorndon and the Anglican Cathedral of Wellington. It remains a place of spiritual significance to many and also has become a popular venue for a wide variety of cultural events.

“Beautiful Wooden church”

There was a jazz concert when I visited, so I could not look around properly. It looked quite peaceful, and worth a visit.

“Another unique NZ experience”

A lovely historic church, a copy of a Victorian UK church except wooden instead of stone. They welcome visitors except when there's a service. It also hosts occasional concerts. Another must see when in Wellington

“A must see for those who like history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2014

Peaceful and calm. A haven if you have had a busy day. Those who built it must have been so proud when they finished. Shame its a tourist attraction more than a church

“Breathtakingly beautiful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 12, 2014

My Wellington city tour included a stop at this old church. It looked very normal to me from the outside, but my guide said "Don't be deceived. Wait til you get inside"

As soon as I stepped in: WOW!

The wonderful smell of the timber just hit me and I JUST LOVED IT!!!
The cathedral was charming, peaceful, beautiful and felt very sacred yet welcoming. The architecture and design of the roof and stained glass windows were mind blowing.

It is now used for a variety events and my guide said they even used it for jazz concert. Really jazz??? Wow! I think it's a brilliant. I could imagine the echos inside the cathedral would be just perfect for any concert.

Make sure you go here!
