Owner description: Be embraced by the beauty of this gorgeous wooden cathedral - still sacred, welcoming to all, in the heart of Wellington's heritage precinct. Breathtakingly beautiful - Wellington's famous Old St Paul's, constructed entirely of native timbers, is one of New Zealand's greatest heritage places. Experience the wonderful and sometimes quirky stories of this former cathedral church, its historic location and its people. Gaze at Old St Paul's unique colonial architecture, admire its exquisite embroidered furnishings and be awed by the colours of its beautiful stained glass windows. It is a magnificent example of timber Gothic Revival architecture. Visit the Gift and all-year-around Christmas Shop at Old St Paul's, which features exquisite gifts, NZ keepsakes and beautiful Christmas decorations, advent calendars and nativity scenes. There is something to suit every taste. The site where Old St Paul's stands was formerly part of Pipitea Pa. For almost 100 years, Old St Paul's served as the parish church of Thorndon and the Anglican Cathedral of Wellington. It remains a place of spiritual significance to many and also has become a popular venue for a wide variety of cultural events.

“Beautiful historic church”
Reviewed November 13, 2013

Don't miss this Anglican church, built on traditional English lines except that it is constructed almost totally of native woods. Beautiful stained glass abounds, and the whole place is suffused with a peaceful and spiritual feel.

“Wooden Marvel”
Reviewed November 8, 2013

Built in a relatively short nine month period in the early 1860’s Old St Paul’s stands in testament to the skill of the architect and carpenters responsible for its design and construction. Native woods are on prominent display throughout what must rank as one of the greatest timber Gothic Revivalist churches remaining in the world today. It is no wonder this building is a listed a New Zealand Category 1 Historic Place. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Wellington with a view to taking in it’s cultural and historic sites; and when you go watch one of more of the ‘Exhibition: Read This Building’ video vinaigrettes for some great background information. St. Paul’s Cathedral is a couple of streets away; but this is the one you should visit.

“Beautiful old church in the centre of the best little Capital City in the World”
Reviewed November 1, 2013

I grew up singing in this church. Beautiful high wooden roof, wonderful stained glass windows, brass forever. It was decommissioned after the new anglican cathedral was built but is still used for a variety of functions. I got married there in a previous marriage, have farewelled some of my best mates and close family at funerals there and last night got to see a great little jazz concert there hosted by Andy London and featuring Lance Philip on drums, James Cameron on basses and Nils Olsen on clarinet and sax. Andy's quirky lyrics and fine guitar work are legend in this part of the country and it was a real joy to sit in the comfortable pews and listen and watch these four fine musos do their stuff. The church is beautifully kept and is open every day just to marvel at the fine architecture or for a bit of peace and quiet. It is a major part of Wellingtons history and is a must see.

“Beautiful styling and windows”
Reviewed October 28, 2013 via mobile

Old St Paul's Cathedral has some stunning examples of stained glass windows, you can't help but be impressed when looking at these. The architecture of this old cathedral constructed in the mid-1800's is gorgeous, beautiful rich wood beams, you will want to ensure you've a few shots left on your camera for Old St Paul's.
