Quest On The Terrace
Reviewed July 12, 2010

I called the Quest on the Terrace to confirm a reduced rate which sounded great.
When I called I was quickly told that this rate was correct and proceeded with the booking.
We called back again to check that this rate was in fact correct and once again we were told that this was correct as we were using a discount card.

When it came time to pay we were told we would have to pay over twice the amount we were quoted over the phone. We were asked to pay $30 over the standard advertised room rate... and told they were doing us a favour! It was also insinuated that I was to blame. Basically DO NOT stay here if you expect what you are told you are getting.

I have stayed here a number of years ago and thought that there would have been a number of improvements by now. Unfortunately the same issues were still prevalent and we were quite disappointed. We booked a 2bdrm apartment on the 13th floor which was meant to sleep 4 people but only had beds for 3. Luckily for us our 4th person decided to stay with friends. The apartment was quite rundown. The dishwasher didnt work, the rangehood over the stove almost fell out of the ceiling when we opened it and the bathroom is tiny for a 2bdrm apartment. The carpet was quite worn and the interior drab un-inviting. We were allocated a car park that we had to pay for out the back of the hotel totally unsecure. Given it was a weekend I decided to waiver the charge and park out the front of the hotel on the terrace as sunday parking is free anyway. The car was perfectly fine out the front. Although this hotel was alot cheaper than every other in the CBD in terms of 2bdrm apartments, I think you get what you pay for.

Check in was quick and easy no issues there - the guy at the front desk was efficient and friendly.

PRO's: The hotel is right next to a mini mart so handy for last minute grocery shopping (sold beer and wine only). It's also centrally located and handy to main shopping areas of Wellington which is an easy 1-2 block walk.

CON's: This place is in serious need of a THOROUGH CLEANING and updating. The smells from other apartments that seeped into and clung to the lift , hallway and our room was off-putting.

I'm glad we only booked in for one night and it was New Year's Eve too so we didn't spend much time in the room.

If you want cheap, central and clean - go elsewhere.

My mother and I had the misfortune to stay at the Quest on the Terrace this week. One night was more than enough! Room 12 B had no air conditioning and you could not leave the windows open due to the traffic noise from the close by motorways! The room was very tired to say the least. Wardrobes did not close properly, bathroom woodwork was damaged, shower screen would not close properly and the bathroom fan sounded like a DC 10 taking off. It was really bad and the last night of a great trip around the north island....

Booking into this apartments / Hotel was easy. Main lobby smells bad and lifts as well. There is no Air conditioning in Room or Fan. The only way to get some cool air into a room is by opening window which opens on the main road. Lift made a lot of noise when it passed the floor as well. I left at 10:30 the evening and booked into the hotel across the street as i could get no sleep due to the high noise levels and stifling heat in the room. The rooms and linen also seemed not to have been washed or cleaned properly. This is not a 4 star but a 1 star motel.

There is a lot to like about the location of this hotel and the staff we met were pleasant BUT there are noise problems in every way!! Our room was close to the lift which produced constant noise throughout the night. The noise from the nearby free way was nothing in comparison. Also the wall were paper thin so we could hear guests who had left or were about to use the lift. All the noise tended to make people above and below restless so this added to the difficulties in sleeping.
Rooms were supposed to be serviced daily but not on Sunday??? None of the help and attention that one would expect from the usually high levels of the New Zealand hospitality industry.

In a last minute decision (and without doing research properly!) we booked a nights accommodation at these apartments. Central location really couldnt be better... we were lucky to be on the city side of building on the 12 floor so didnt have any problems with street noise (no more than you would expect).

Check in was no problems even though we arrived outside of office hours... rang the manager on the intercom outside and he was down within 5 mins. Very nice man and was helpful and pleasant to deal with.

Overall impression of building was it was very run down with lots of damage to hallways and lift (missing paint, dents, missing chrome etc)... Now sorry to be rude but this place stunk! from the moment we got out of the elevator to the first wiff of our room it smelt like stale curry and wet dog..... Getting to our room we quickly saw how let down other guests (trust the reviews!!!) would have been.

We were in the 1.5 bedroom suite which had 4 single beds in two small rooms, an open plan kitchen & dining to main living space and deck. To use the words shabby would be overstating the cleanliness of room. Dishwasher was rusted, layer of dust on top of cabinets was visable from floor, piles of human hair (from both head and tail) were found throughout, dust and god knows what else behind doors....the list really goes on... totally totally gross...

Since we were only staying one night (and most of that was going out for NYE) we just decided to live and learn. Never never NEVER stay here again.. honestly frightened to touch anything!
