“Nice rooms but very noisy!!!”
Reviewed November 11, 2011

This is a city centre hotel with a nice old world look. The rooms are very nice and well cleaned, however they suffer from poor insulation to the bar downstairs. The late night bar and the locals on the street make for a poor nights sleep - but if your partying then it's ok. A little expensive for what it is and the noise!!!

Room Tip: no quiet rooms

I stayed in this hotel for the first 3 night during RWC 2011. The room smells, was never made, the bed and pillows are not even fit for a hostel and the pub made a noise until 4am.

Stayed 3 nights in the Cambridge. Rooms are small and very basic, but having paid c 60 NZD per night, they were good value, and I didn't expect much. Shared bathrooms are clean and showers warm. Hotel very well placed for Courtney Place and harbour only 5 mins away, as is Basin Reserve, the test match ground. Has a well worn feel about it, but if you are needing somewhere cheap and clean, then this is absolutely fine. No complaints

Recently stayed here, as have done in the past, as it is convenient and inexpensive - although prices are rising and you can find cheaper via the internet.

The inside of this Hotel is a surprise as the old structure has been tastefully restored and is attractive. There are back packer facilities downstairs so it would be possible to save money by taking your own food and using their communal kitchen. (That area is a bit tatty).

It has a character lift - which usually works fine but was stuck between floors when we arrived so we had to lug luggage up to the second floor.

The ensuite is snug but clean and the bed kingsized - maybe superking? - and very comfortable. There are tea and coffee making facilities but you have to plug the kettle in at floor level. There was no spoon to stir this time but there usually is. TV and fridge of course (also available in the singles which I have used in the past).

If you arrive in Wellington without a car this isnt a bad choice as it is just handy to Courtney place where buses from the station and airport stop regularly. With a car it isnt a good choice as there is no parking even if you are prepared to pay. The nearby lot isnt geared up for hotel parking.

The other two disadvantages are noise and meals. On some nights there is noise from the bar although this is much less noticeable if in the double rooms than if in the singles. On this recent occasion we were there on a Sunday night and went down to ask for a dinner menu in the bar.

Their dinner meals here are basically a range of pub style meals at an affordable price. The main bar is noisy but the back area isnt quite so bad, except for the two TVs! We asked for a menu for dinner and waited for the last of our guests to arrive. The menu was classed into categories and we chose from the dinner menu and when the last person was there put in our order only to be told they dont do dinner on Sundays except a roast!!! We were annoyed they hadnt told us this at the beginning and it wasnt displayed obviously on the menu so we had to go to the Craftsman round the corner. (No issues here and so we went back there as well for breakfast). But surprising in such a busy venue that there would be no dinner menu on a weekend night.

Overall I would call it an average venue with its location being its bonus and if not pre-booked and looking for a room it might be the cheapest option for two travelling without a vehicle.

Room Tip: Ask to be above the side road.

Great location by Courtney Place. The staff is very friendly and always willing to help. They have a great bar which also serves good food. Rooms can be a little small, but are clean and in good conditions. There is a more professional approach towards hospitality at the Cambridge, which works as a true hotel.

If you are traveling as a backpacker, the shared kitchen is great, but there are no dishes or cuttlery.
Breakfast is awesome and at very reasonable prices!

Stayed at the single room shared toilet/bath for nzd60 if not mistaken.
Location is central just behind Courtney place. Easy walk to main central city and major bus stations. Close to Te Papa.

A bit noisy at night as the windows were made of wood and it was nearby pubs and other backpackers. Bed was comfy. Clean small 14inch tv hung at the corner of the wall. A table and cabinet. Adequate if on a budget and need to be in Wellington.
