I fully agree with other reviewers that the décor in this hotel is dated and most definitely in need of an upgrade, but once you get past that, you find yourself staying in a really comfortable, convenient hotel with helpful and friendly staff, and it would be a shame to miss out just based on some out of date furnishings.

We stayed on club level, which I think has coloured my experience, as the amenities available were first class. Our deal included unlimited free wifi, free valet parking and all the facilities in the club lounge. You could choose to either have breakfast in the lounge or go down to the main Chameleon restaurant. We ate in the restaurant, and had a really superb buffet breakfast each day. In the club lounge you can also have afternoon tea - this was a real treat, served while you relax in comfort enjoying the view overlooking the harbour. The sandwiches, cakes and scones were beautifully presented and very fresh. The staff in the club lounge are very attentive, and can't do enough for you. In the early evening you can enjoy drinks and snacks - if you're still hungry after the huge breakfast and afternoon tea!

The hotel has a small pool, hot tub and sauna as well as a fitness centre, which are all fairly standard, and nothing special. One unexpected benefit here is a guest laundry which was absolutely free; even washing powder was provided.

The location is excellent - a two minute walk from the main shopping centre and the cable car in one direction and all the restaurants on Queen's Wharf in the other. It's also very near the park and only a 10-15 minute walk to the Te Papa museum. It's a short drive to the Interislander ferry. I would stay here again if I am ever lucky enough to return to Wellington.

Room Tip: Go club level if you can!

This hotel is a real pity: You can tell that it used to be a truly grand experience some decades back and the staff is awesome in every way: Great check in experience, friendly concierge, helpful staff all over the property. But- and this is a huge but- the hotel is stuck in decades past. We had a so-called superior room but even that looked like the refresh has been quite a while back and specially the bathrooms have been stuck in the 70ies. Horrid decor throughout, including the hallways and awful looking wood-paneled lobby and restaurant. We even had one of those armchairs in the room where you could clearly tell that there were black and grey stains right on the arm rests where thousands of people have rested their arms over the 20something years this ugly thing has been in here: Yuck! Saying all that, it's probably still the best hotel in Wellington there is and this says a lot. Clearly the lack of competition is what makes Intercontinental think they can get away without refurbishing this property. Wish there was a decent new Hilton like in Auckland or something opening up and I bet the Intercon would close for renovation straight after. It's a bit sad really, we really loved the property and the staff is still trying hard but you simply can't cover the old and moldy feeling throughout.

Room Tip: The harbour view rooms are nice but cost extra.

Great location, very central and about 5 mins from the Waterfront area. Staff very friendly and helpful, concierge in particular knew their stuff. Lobby area pleasant, breakfast very good and superior rooms nice. Was able to get a late check out which was appreciated.

Areas to improve - the Classic rooms are horrid, there is Classic and there is dated - these are just dated I'm afraid! You have to go for a Superior room although they also need to update the bathrooms which are not 5 star.....why go to the trouble and expense of upgrading the bedroom but let yourselves down not updating a very tired bathroom! Pool area and gym could do with updating as well - the equipment and the jacuzzi looked like they had been put in in the 80s and hadn't been updated since. Internet prices were ridiculous (glad we had it included in the rate) and the coverage was pretty poor.

So, overall, the staff are superb and the location is great. Definitely better than what some people have said and if you can get a good deal, worth considering. There are enough amenities and facilities but to do the staff justice, Intercontinental - please invest some money in modernising all the rooms and gym/pool areas.

Room Tip: High floors quieter, pay the little extra for a Superior room

For all the times I've been to Wellington, I'd never stayed here, so treated myself. Rooms are a little tired but all more than adequate. Perfect location in town in what is a very walker friendly city.

Room Tip: Rooms on higher floors are quieter

The hotel is in a fantastic location in central Wellington. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We were upgraded to a room with a great view over the harbour. The only downside to the hotel is the decor, which as stated in other reviews, is a little dated and tired. Other than that it is a good place to stay.

Using our Priority Privileges benefits made this Hotel a very reasonable price for a relaxing weekend. I booked a King Spa Room, as even through we didn't use the spa the room was a nice corner space with a side view of the ocean without paying for the harbour view. The room was one of the up-dated but the bathroom is still the old style and the titles in the shower were grotty with mold! The staff were friendly and efficient especially the concierge who were very helpful. I would not recommend the Arizona restaurant, the environment is great but the food was very disappointing, everything we ordered was overcooked and dry, the waiter agreed my Husbands Medium/Rare steak was Well-done but just stated that the Chef was new and we never received any further feedback or an apology! Enjoyed our breakfasts in the Chameleon.

Room Tip: Recommend an up-dated corner room.

As one of our Priority Privilege members we truly value your honest feedback and would like to thank you for providing us with your recent review. I am glad you enjoyed your stay with us; in particular the 5 star service provided from our ‘In the Know’ concierge team. As for your experience in Arizona please accept my sincerest apologies. I can assure you this is not indicative of our usual standards and I have spoken to the Manager concerned regarding this incident. We look forward to welcoming you and your husband back to InterContinental Wellington in the near future.

The biggest issue I have (and I stay hotels more than half the year around the world) with this hotel is no complimentary water and the internet is data capped and outrageously expensive!

Seriously, most 5-star hotels offer free wifi everywhere and if they do charge, it's realistic and not almost expensive as global roaming on data! The final blow is that it is only for one device not even multiple devices...

The rooms are 80's style but maybe thats considered luxurious in Wellington...

It certainly should not be carrying the Intercontinental brand on it and if you are here for business and need to be connected I would recommend going elsewhere.
