Description: There has been a Mexican wave developing in New Zealand and Pan de Muerto, with its dynamic design and modern cuisine, is at the forefront of this wave. Pan de Muerto, Mystic Mexican Cuisine and Tequila Bar, represents the progression of the original Pan de Muerto concept that first opened in 2010. The restaurant is named after the sacred bread eaten by Mexicans during the annual celebration of the lives of their deceased loved ones. Pan de Muerto's approach to dining represents a celebration of life, friends, family and loved ones. Dining is a sharing experience where you select from a range of Pequenos bocados (small bites) or Tapas as they are more commonly known throughout the world. The diverse and interesting selection of Pequenos bocados on the menu are all perfectly complimented by Wellington's largest selection of imported tequila and Mexican cerveza. Our dishes are meticulously prepared and executed using a mix of mainly imported and local produce. You will find traditional Mexican dishes, as well as modern variations of traditional dishes and flavours. The menu changes regularly to make the most of seasonal ingredients. Pan de Muerto is not just known for its flavoursome food. The incredible decor speaks volumes about the passion that has gone into the development of this restaurant. As you enter the restaurant you step into another world, with a mix of contemporary and rustic design, and subtle details that will surprise. An infusion of friendly human size skeletons are scattered throughout the restaurant. Affectionately named 'Pedro', the smiling sugar skull takes pride of place on the restaurant's logo and is now widely associated with Mexican food throughout New Zealand. The food and decor is complemented by professional friendly service with a South American feel to give you a truly authentic dining experience. Pan de Muerto has created a very unique and friendly dining experience which caters for people of all ages. On special occasions, you might see face painting or watch the restaurant transform into a dance floor with live Mariachi bands. There's always something new happening. Make every meal likes it's your last, break bread with us at Pan De Muerto. Hasta pronto

“Fantastic!”
Reviewed June 12, 2014

This place came highly reccomended and after reading the reviews, I was expecting alot. I went with workmates and we were not let down. The decor is amazing. Staff were helpful regarding the different beers available (all authentic Mexican beers, don’t ask for Heineken!).

The menu is great. If you want your classic Mexican dish, no problem, but if your looking for something with a bit of a twist, then this is the place to go! We had a small muck up with the entrees but if we had even been concerned as soon as you take a bite all is good with the world! The food here is excellent.

The size of the mains are fine, as is the price point. In fact, we thought the prices were good so we ordered entrees as well. We met the owner who took time out to come over to our table and welcome us, which put a personal touch to the evening. I’m looking forward to returning and sampling more of what Pan de Muerto has to offer!

“Great Mexican”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

Great little Mexican place in Wellington that is probably as authentic as the city gets. I've dined here a few times and each time have had really great food. The only issue is that they don't accept booking so if you're looking to eat here on a Friday or Saturday night I would get there by 6 and just have a drink before you order - that way you've safely got a table before the crowds! Based on my experiences here I would recommend to just order from the entrees/tapas menu and try a bunch! The ceviche is beautiful and fresh and the chimichangas are wonderful, all crisp pastry and flavourful filling! Churros for dessert are also a good option, but on occasion they have been slightly undercooked so it's kind of luck of the draw.

Overall its a great little Mexican place with some lovely fresh food and a very cool atmosphere!

“Nice decor”
Reviewed May 20, 2014

Went with my partner on a Tuesday night and had 4 choices from the tapas style menu, food was ok but very little of it and very expensive, margaritas were ok but lacked the salt, found the service very slow (was a Tuesday night and not busy) desert was ok, I had churro's and my partner had chocolate pie which was delicious. Unfortunately staff failed to clean up floor spills and my partner slipped and fell as we left, she was ok but staff weren't interested. I would not go back to this restaraunt despite the awesome decor. Not value for money. And disinterested staff.

“Food and margaritas are amazing! ”
Reviewed May 19, 2014 via mobile

Went here with a friend on a Monday night. We ordered five dishes from the tapas style menu and they were all delicious! Love this style of menu as you get to try lots of things. The best for me was this great fresh prawn and white fish salad. Portions are really generous. Food was full of flavour and spice , so delicious! Service was good. The waitress that saw us first was good and explained the menu really clearly and also let us know about two for one frozen margaritas. Yum! Another waitress took our order and seemed to look after us throughout he rest of the meal. She was good too but I felt they were a little unattentive. There was no meal check and we had to go up to the bar ourselves to order drinks at one stage. The restaurant wasn't busy so not sure why this was maybe it was unclear who was supposed to be looking after our table? This is only a minor thing however. Really loved it here!
