“Wonderful charming hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2012

Booked this hotel and hadnt really looked into too much but on our arrival to Wellington we were greeted by a wonderful old-world charm in the lobby. The lift was an adventure in itself- oldstyle and just beautiful. We werent disappointed with the room either. Amazing bathroom and decor throughout.
So much so that we booked in to stay additional night. Definately worth the extra to stay here.

It was refreshing to stay somewhere that wasn't beige! Fantastic to have a couch and armchairs in my room...and the bathroom is simply amazing! Love the old style lift! The service was amazing with the room checked by staff when I checked in to make sure it was perfect. Dinner was lovely and tasty and there was plenty of choice. Loved sitting by the fire for a glass of wine before our party up on the first floor.

Room Tip: Defintely go for the rooms with the living area...so nice to have a room with space. Definitely go f...

What's not to like?
This a wonderfully- olde worlde hotel with an exquisite charm. From the wooden lift to the grand staircase , this hotel reeks of quality and timelessness. we enjoyed sitting by the open fire in high-backed leather armchairs, while a bison stared down on us. The coffee was brilliant and the service polite, unintrusive and friendly. We were met at Reception and then shown to our rooms. the room is tastefully-furnished, with 13 ft ceilings decorated in Edwardian style. The furniture is also old-school, beautifully crafted and totally in keeping.
The beds are wonderful, and little or no noise intruded from the street.
All in all, a wonderful experience.
We will make this our hotel of choice when in Wellington.

Room Tip: The Hornblow (#203 ) is my favourite.

If you ever need some time to unwind and treat yourself, this is the place to go to! Not only does this boutique hotel provide exceptional customer service, there is so much character and history, as opposed to your "sterile" global hotel chains.
We stayed 2 nights in a deluxe executive room. The bathroom is filled with Molton Brown goodies, the room was reasonably sized and the robes were fantastic after soaking in the tub!
The hotel is situated within easy walking distance to most, if not all tourist attractions in Wellington, such as the likes of the wharf, portrait gallery, Te Papa museum and Lambton Quay, aka shopping haven! We walked to Westpac stadium (in the cold!!) which was an easy walk from the hotel, approx 15-20 minutes.
The staff at the Wellesley are incredibly friendly, down to earth and more importantly professional. The service is not "stuffy/arrogant" nor "over the top". We were very fortunate to have an early check in and check out.
There is no gym at the hotel, they do have an offer in conjunction with a high end gym close by.
I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

The best parts were that it was very quiet and dark at night for excellent sleeping. The bed was fine and people nice (even stamped our postcards for free.) The off putting things were that the lighting was inadequate. Not only was the room a bit dim but the bathroom lighting was much too low. Also the bathroom while itself quite large and modern had no place to put things. This seems to be a common problem in the places we stayed in NZ with the notable exception of American chains such as Hilton and Crowne Plaza. If the manager is reading this - please add some shelf space by the sink for toiletries and increase the bathroom lighting. Also the particular room we stayed had a shower that resulted in water on the rest of the floor. But the bath and supplied products and robes were delightful.

The Wellesley is my new favorite hotel. I loved the look of the hotel from the website; it had more charm and character than any other hotel I saw in my online search. I was not disappointed when we arrived. The beautiful wood paneled walls, the black and white tile floors and beautiful old furnishings gave the hotel an aura of timeless grace. We arrived in the morning, hours before check in time, but the young lady at the check in counter showed us to another room where we could rest after our 14 hour flight while our room was being prepared. When our room was ready she moved our luggage for us into the spacious, high ceilinged room, where I was delighted to find an adjacent bathroom with a huge porcelin clawfooted tub and every necessary ammenity including shampoos, conditioners, lotions, body wash, facial cloths and a mending kit. We stayed for seven nights and during that time peeked in at a few other hotels in the area just to compare rooms and facilities. None could hold a candle to the Wellesley; the others were very cookie cutter and more of the same plain box of a room. Everyone at the hotel went above and beyond. We got to know the staff who were the friendliest people we've met in New Zealand and that's saying something (we even got a hug goodbye after we were walked out to our waiting taxi by our wonderful new friend at the registration desk). I only wish we had eaten more meals at the restaurant on site, Maginnity's. The food was delicious, reasonably priced, and again we were so well taken care of by the staff that there was nothing more we could have asked for. Even special requests were happily accommodated. Love this place, the people, the food, the rooms, and the location as well; just a block or two from the main shopping street, the train station and parliament. Everything was very reasonably priced as well. All around perfect vacation!

Stayed here on a Saturday night before going on the ferry on Sunday. Convienent location to the ferry, the CBD, the Quay, and the Government Buildings. Wonderful, updated old building.
Staff was very helpful. Room and bath(there is only 16) also great. A wedding took place in the ballroom on the first floor in the evening which was an addition to the greneral gay atmosphere of the hotel.
Dinner in the hotel restaurant, Chef was rated #1 in Wellington in 2011, great lamb & beef.
