Normally my husband and I stay at the Mercure but with the Rugby World Cup in town we were unable to secure consecutive night bookings. So by default we searched the internet and came across the Richmond Guest House website. It appealed to us as we were looking for something within walking distance of the city plus the price was a bonus. We bounced emails to John who replied within hours and this is how our initial dialogue began. Upon our arrival we were met by Louisa who orientated us to the use of the guest house and offered us a hot cuppa. We had a room in the basement (as i've heard others call it) with a comfortable bed, plenty of drawers (a nice change from living out of a suitcase in a hotel), the best shower in the world (strong pressure with loads of hot water), heater which we used to take the evening chill from the room (with the light dimmer the room took on a cosy homey feeling) and neither of us complained of not sleeping well in fact we slept a little too well. John was happy to accommodate our request to pay up the day before as we had a 6am flight the following morning. If you ever hire a car (Hertz rentals one street down on Hania) be sure to see John for a parking permit it will save you an unexpected traffic infringement take it from me I woke up to find tickets on two cars parked behind mine. Breakfast was a relaxed and enjoyable experience with John regaling us with stories from around Wellington and across the world whilst making toast for his guests. Given our busy lifestyles it was so refreshing to experience this no-frills establishment and it's host John with his unique personality and dry sense of humor. Would we stay here again? Yes we would!! To John and Louisa all I can say is 'keep doing what you're doing' and thanks for making our stay comfortable and enjoyable.
