Normally my husband and I stay at the Mercure but with the Rugby World Cup in town we were unable to secure consecutive night bookings. So by default we searched the internet and came across the Richmond Guest House website. It appealed to us as we were looking for something within walking distance of the city plus the price was a bonus. We bounced emails to John who replied within hours and this is how our initial dialogue began. Upon our arrival we were met by Louisa who orientated us to the use of the guest house and offered us a hot cuppa. We had a room in the basement (as i've heard others call it) with a comfortable bed, plenty of drawers (a nice change from living out of a suitcase in a hotel), the best shower in the world (strong pressure with loads of hot water), heater which we used to take the evening chill from the room (with the light dimmer the room took on a cosy homey feeling) and neither of us complained of not sleeping well in fact we slept a little too well. John was happy to accommodate our request to pay up the day before as we had a 6am flight the following morning. If you ever hire a car (Hertz rentals one street down on Hania) be sure to see John for a parking permit it will save you an unexpected traffic infringement take it from me I woke up to find tickets on two cars parked behind mine. Breakfast was a relaxed and enjoyable experience with John regaling us with stories from around Wellington and across the world whilst making toast for his guests. Given our busy lifestyles it was so refreshing to experience this no-frills establishment and it's host John with his unique personality and dry sense of humor. Would we stay here again? Yes we would!! To John and Louisa all I can say is 'keep doing what you're doing' and thanks for making our stay comfortable and enjoyable.

I stayed four nights. The bedroom and ensuite were both clean with fresh
towels supplied daily. The bedroom was warm with a heater going when I arrived. The bed was very comfortable.
John is a great host and goes out of his way to provide a good service. I was offered a hot drink when I arrived. When I left he arranged transport for me to the railstation.[He even carried my cases for me]
A good breakfast is provided and the food is fresh [ no soggy toast] Free tea coffee etc are available which is a nice touch.
I would recommend this guest house, its good value.

Room Tip: Down stairs bedrooms are quietest and just as warm.

I found Richmond Guest House in Wellington, NZ a very pleasant place to stay. Strategic location, just about 5 to 10 minutes on foot to the city centre (Courtney Place). Friendly management. Good breakfast. Very clean room. Planning to visit Wellington soon? Well, please be sure to check out this guest house -- a very pleasant place to stay.

We felt right at home at this quaint B&B. John, the owner, is friendly and holds a good conversation. The rooms are well decorated and cozy with heating. There's internet. It was a home away from home and we will definitely be back next time we need a place to stay in Wellington.

Although we had informed that we were arriving late we were not expected. It is an old wooden house that are being renovated. The rooms are OK. A bit cold but there are heaters. OK breakfast, free wifi (which is not so common in NZ), spacious rooms. No tv. It is a quiet neighbourhood a 10 minute´s walk to town (which is quite much for little Wellington).

I loved our stay at Richmond House. John is an awesome host, friendly and down to earth. Our room was clean and spotless and our bed was sooooo comfortable. The decor took us back to a "by gone" era of simplicity and praticality ...before the mobile phones, the computers and the designer furniture - simple but comfortable and oh so clean and well presented. John's collection of porcelain figurines are to be admired, they are well presented and tasteful and complements the furnishings. If you want modern furnishings, the latest gadgets and designer appliances - this is not the place for you - if you want to be reminded of the way New Zealand and New Zealanders "used to be then this is the place to stay. Well done John, keep up the excellent service - Ken & Cathy, Kaitaia, New Zealand
