Take the cable car up; it's a fun relic from the past and at the top you get a great view out over the city and harbor. Just get a one-way ticket as you can walk back to the city from the bottom of the garden. It's on a hillside, so it's all downhill from the cable car. Get a map from one of the friendly docents and pick a trail to follow down to the lower gardens which are the most interesting. The tree-house on the way down has facilities. The more formal gardens at the bottom are lovely, especially the rose garden. Fortunately you do not have to climb back up as there's a delightful path back to the city through an historic graveyard.

This is a must if you visit Wellington. Take the cable car up to the top and do a leisurely stroll back down to town. There is an amazing kids playground close to the observatory. The views are great and the roses were out in full bloom when we were there. Everything is so beautiful! There was even a live band playing the afternoon we were there.

Got the bus (No 6, I think) here as the Cable Car was very busy (a cruise boat was in), but got the Cable Car back down to town.

Lovely rose garden, the begonia house has some wonderful tropical and temperate plants on display. There are lots of different walks some including some interesting sculptures and other art-work.

Nice cafe by the rose garden.

Well worth a visit, lots to see.

Take the cable car up the slope and enjoy the magnificent view of Wellington!

Up there, we toured the cable car museum before taking walk in the garden. Take time to explore fine scenic spots here and there, especially the rose garden. If got time, on the way back up the hill, stay in the open area outside the observatory and wait for the beautiful sun set.

There is a small cafe up there, but it is nice to bring your own sandwiches so that you can choose a best spot in the greens and enjoy.

Take the cable car back down as the walk back from the garden exit on the other side of the town may not worth it especially when it gets dark.

Wow!!.... Early April & all the roses & other flowering plants were out in full magnificent bloom. The range of colors were awesome, so glad of the time we spent at the Gardens. The cafe also was a delight, sitting outside overlooking the rose gardens.
