“A rip off, but good location, most hotel like YHA ever seen”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 24, 2010

It's the most expensive YHA I've ever seen. Looks like a massive hotel and acts like it a bit. Reception staff didn't know where we could park over night despite having an email from them saying they did. We parked at the museum car park. Rooms are lovely and location is good. Kitchen is manic and a little small for the size of the building.

we were there on a hot busy weekend, the room was hot and with no aircon and windows open it was loud, the info and facilities are reasonable but do remember it is a youth hostel with all that that entails for good or bad depending on your perspective

Pretty expensive as hostels go, but that may just be due to Wellington being a capital city (NZD 31 for a 4 bed female dorm, or 34 if you're not a YHA member).

The dorm was nice - very spacious, with a desk and chair in addition to the beds. The bunks were quite rickety metal ones, but mattresses were comfy. The 4 bed dorm is ensuite, and the bathroom is decent.

As everyone had to get ready at once in the morning, we also got to use the communal bathrooms. These are good too, with decent showers and a hairdryer.

The kitchens (there are two) are very clean and spacious and there's plenty of room to sit and eat.

Staff are helpful and friendly at reception and the location, across from the supermarket, near all the bars, and only a v short walk from attractions like Te Papa Museum, can't be beaten.

Last time I stayed here the noise wasn't so bad. Seems like they have upgraded the night club to make it impossible to sleep. Location is good and if you want to spend the night drinking till 4am its probably fine.

Being spoilt and never stayed at any hotel short of a five star quality, I was really satisfied with the quality of YHA for its pricing. I had never stayed at a hostel before and didn't really know what to expect; but my room, bathroom and bedding were clean and I had lots of fun. Location was convenient to the supermarket, restaurants, cafes, Te Papa and the waterfront.

Right over the road from Te Papa, this hostel was in a great location. The hostel has good clean double rooms and the kitchens here were huge.

They have gone green past the point of green, to the point of cheap. The heater only stays on 30 minutes, and then kicks off. This cannot be avoided, we tried and asked.

Also, very very young scene. Pretty clean; there was some mold in the shower. No TV, but we expected this.

GREAT location.

REALLY RUDE, REALLY RUDE staff.

If you are on a budget, perhaps stay here during the summer; during the winter, go somewhere with heat.
