The room was a decent size for 4 beds and being on the 6th floor was quiet. It had no lockers but space for your backpacks and was en-suite with a good shower. The heater wasn’t that good and the room quickly became cold once the heater was switched off. The facilities were, as you would expect, very good: big well equipped kitchen, tv room, a very good book exchange, a quiet room for reading. The location was excellent within easy reach of bars & shops and a supermarket opposite. One of, if not the best, YHA in New Zealand.

Its been a long time since I stayed in a hostel and I would have to say I am very impressed. We had a family ensuite room (me, hubby and two young children) and it was brilliant. Yes the rooms are small but they are very clean and safe - and cheap! (we got a special deal, kids for free so only NZ$60 a night for the room). And yes there is a little noise but thats part of the fun of staying in a hostel in the city. Our children loved it. The staff are very friendly and very helpful. the communal rooms are modern and brilliantly set up. The location could not be better - easy walking to the fabulour Te Papa museum and lots of great restaurants and cafes. New World Supermarket is right across the road and open to midnight. Parking is an issue but you can get free parking in some areas if you are prepared to walk a little and you can leave your car overnight in the TePap for NZ$6. We will definitely stay there again.

This was large hostel and the rooms were nice and new but extremely small. The kitchens and communal area, however, were very big and there was plenty of space. The hostel was right across the road form a supermarket and close to the museum. The staff were very helpful and the internet availablility was good.

We stayed on at one of the city centre hotels with excellent leisure amenities, two double beds and full breakfast. We then booked into an ensuite room at the YHA, and saved only NZ$40 a night, losing all the amenities and the all-you-can-eat brekky. Building resounds with vibration from lifts and is positioned on a busy corner of the one-way system. This may be great value if you're in dorms, but very disappointed by the price paid for a basic family room.

We had an ensuite room for three nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The facilities are superb, though the dining area can get pretty busy around 7pm when lots of people want to have dinner. Having a huge supermarket just across the road is really handy. In fact the central location makes the hostel incredible value. Our room was really small with no storage and the view was non existent, but the bed was comfy and the shower fine and if you are out all day, it hardly matters. If you are happy to stay in a hostel rather than a hotel or motel, then this one is highly recommended.
