“The best hostel I've ever stayed”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 18, 2012

So far, it was the best hostel I had ever stayed in New Zealand. The staffs were so friendly and helpful. The room was huge and comfortable, and so was the kitchen. Its reading and meeting room was quite small but enough quiet to enjoy. It was located closely to the Te Papa, New World supermarket and numberless restaurants.

The YHA in Wellington was absolutely huge, with many floors filled with various room sizes. We booked a private room with private bath, which was clean but very small.

The location is great, right in the center of the city and close to all the attractions and restaurants.

With so many people coming and going, it felt a bit like a zoo, but also gave the impression of a well-oiled machine.

YHA Wellington is on Wakefield St. Directly opposite to New World, you can buy your groceries just across the street for your meals. It is a few steps away from Courtney Place and Te Papa, which makes it conveniently located in the heart of Wellington City. If you want to get here from the railway station however, note that it is around 20 minutes walk.

There are 2 kitchens and 2 dining areas for guests. There is a flag kitchen for schools and bigger groups and another kitchen for normal backpackers. Guests are welcomed to use either. The kitchens are cleaned twice a day, once during mid afternoon and another during the mid of the night. It is this cleaning that makes the YHA stands out amongst many other hostels, whose kitchens were always in a mess. Thumbs up for this. When there are big groups staying in the hostel and using the flag dining area, the other sitting area for guests has too little tables and chairs and is insufficient during meal times. The games room/tv room and reading room are similarly occupied by big groups while they are there and other guests do not have the opportunity to use these facilities.

The rooms are clean and neat. There is sufficient space in each room for guests to put their bags and luggages. Sheets and blankets are neatly folded on the bed and you have to fit on the sheets and blanket yourself. I stayed in 2 types of rooms in this hostel and have to say I have different impressions of the rooms.

1. I was given a 4-bed room with bathroom ensuite facing the sea with a really awesome view of the harbour. Large amount of space in the room and a place to store your luggage/put your items. Like another reviewer has commented, another hostel would have tried to fit in 6 beds in the same room. The door to the bathroom was creaky, noisy and needed oiling. Facing the sea, it was exposed to stronger winds, and having 1 heater in the room didn't help much, in particularly when it was timed to go off every 5 minutes after it was off. We cannot be pressing on the on button every 5 minutes in the middle of the night when it is the coldest. Another blanket/heater will be needed to keep warm.

2. In the 6-bed room, there was less space available for luggages, but still sufficient. Bathroom was outside the room but was considerably better without the squeaky bathroom door to content with. This room did not have a view and was facing the inside of the hostel. Temperature much warmer and did not require the heater in the room, though there were 2.

While the cleaning practices of the hostel makes this hostel stands out, they need to improve in the heating of the rooms facing the sea and ensuring that all door are well-oiled. Note a maximum 10 day stay in this hostel and there is no free luggage storage after check-out. You have to check out latest by 10am and if you are intending to leave at 5pm, you need to store your luggage in one of the lockers there for $1/2 hours, a service where most hostels will provide free of charge.

Will I stay here again? Maybe if I do not intend to check out late. In the meantime, I will check out some of the other hostels in Wellington.

We ended up in two x single rooms at the Y after the "one bedroom apartment" we booked at Statford on Willis Apartment Hotel turned out to be a studio apartment for the price of a one bedroom. Staff here were very friendly, and although we didn't use most of the facilities I have stayed here before, and they are excellent. Great for groups with a large kitchen and dining area, rooms for meetings, and very centrally located. However, compared to other hostels in the same area, their single rooms are very expensive.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing in - rooms on the street are horrifically noisy.

We didn't care for this hostel very much. Granted, we weren't experienced hostel-users at the time - this was the first trip that we'd stayed in hostels, but still, we were disappointed. Our room was alright - clean and pretty much what we had expected, however, the view was a wall. I know this is budget accomodations, but all of the other hostels that we've stayed at were very nice and some had amazing views. I would've been happier to be able to see the city. We were in a two-person private room.

The bathrooms weren't memorable - so that's good - they were clean. I remember them being a little busy and we did have to wait occasionally.

What bothered us the most was the kitchen. It was quite crowded during peak meal times, but also, we found it quite dirty at times. In the morning, it would be clean, but as the day went on, I don't think people properly cleaned up after themselves and it wasn't the cleanest. There was a gross smell to it too - I remember not wanting to be in there very long because of it. I didn't like cooking here.

I think our biggest issue with this hostel was that it was a big hostel and a home to many people, whereas we were used to hostels that were much smaller in size, and therefore they were often cleaner, less crowded, and had nicer and more homey facilities. If you're used to big hostels and don't mind, this would probably be sufficient for you. For us, we prefer the very personalized feel of the smaller ones and getting to know the other guests. This hostel wasn't for us.

Room Tip: I forget our room #, but we had a private room for two people and there was no view out our window...

We stayed here for three nights and we loved it! There are two big kitchens which are kept super clean and really well equipped. The communal areas are really spacious and comfortable. This hostel is also in a brilliant location, it is right in the centre of town and there is a New World supermarket right across the street. Our room was a little small but it had a lovely view of the harbour. There is also a little cafe at the front of the hostel which does nice coffees. Would highly recommend staying here!
