The best hostel I've ever stayed! Thumbs up on the friendly staff, cleanliness and facilities. Close to Te Papa, Oriental bay and Courtenay place, the city's heart of entertainment. Highly recommended.

This really is a YHA that thinks it's a hotel, right down to the tea/coffee facilities and toiletries in our ensuite bathroom!
The only problem is the buildling is in party central! It has great big windows and zero sound proofing. You'll not only hear but feel every club beat, literally till 4 in the morning.
So unless you're going to be in those bars till 4am, don't stay here, it's a big false economy. Spend some extra dollars on a hotel in the peaceful civic district.

An increbible hostel. Perfect location, looks like a hotel entrance, rooms are imaculate, the living areas are huge, two well equpiped kitchens, 2 great big dinning areas, 2 TV rooms and sofas dotted all over the place.
I cant recommend this place enough.

The YHA in wellington city is well sited (central and very close to a good supermarket), and it's pretty clean and comfortable if a little austere in the bedrooms. We stayed in a deluxe room with a bathroom. All in all it was okay, but there are much better deals in Wellington. Lots of the last minute deals for hotels and apartments are only $10-20 more and they are much better appointed in terms of big comfortable beds, kitchen facilities, cable tv, etc. If you love the hostel experience this one is fine and you'll have no problem meeting people there, but if you like a bit of space, privacy, and comfort I would recommend looking around at last minute hotel deals instead.

  • Liked — central
  • Disliked — rooms small and austere, and not serviced regularly

A previous reviewer seems to have had a very bad time here but I am not sure why - this was a great hostel, one of the best we stayed at in New Zealand. We had no problems with cleanliness and the staff were all fantastic. There was lots of room and plenty of places to sit and relax as well as a games room, a tv lounge, a reading room and a good kitchen area. The internet terminals were plentiful and the location was excellent - very central. We stayed here in April 2007 and would happily stay there again - our double room was very clean and comfortable and a lot cheaper than a hotel. If you are looking for hotel service and facilities at a hostel price then don't come here - it is not a hotel it is a hostel and there will be kids and elderly people and tour groups. If however you know what to expect this is about as good a hostel as you will find.

  • Liked — Staff, facilities, location, cleanliness
  • Disliked — Can be busy and with a wide range of people, including tour groups.

I stayed at this hostel in mid November, and I quite enjoyed my stay. I travelled on my own and stayed in a 4 bed dorm with a full bathroom. I had great roomates, who were like me- all women travelling on their own. There are quite a few areas where you can chill out, with a nice internet lounge where you candownload photos from your camera to a CD. The location can't be beat. It is right across the street from a huge grocery store, and you are within 5 mins walking distance from restaurants, a movie theatre, and the Te Papa Museum. Great staff as well. I would have no qualms recommending this hostel as a place to stay. Wellington is a great city as well- IMO, a friendlier city than Auckland.

  • Liked — Location, layout, cleanliness, onsite travel service
  • Disliked — it was all good.
