“Doubt I'll be staying again.”
Reviewed November 7, 2012

You'll pardon me if I laugh at their advertising: "The Historic Hotel Waterloo was chosen to host the Queen's entourage on her 1953 Coronation Tour of New Zealand. When the hotel was converted for budget accommodation, the luxuries remained." Luxuries??? It doesn't seem to have been touched since 1953!

The ONLY thing to recommend it is the proximity to the station/bus terminal. It's on the corner of Bunny St and Waterloo Quay and right across the road from the terminal. I came in late pm and left early am. The German chap who booked me in was courteous. I asked for a quiet room and got one at the back of the hotel.

Cost for single with shared bathroom: $69.36 NZD when paid by credit card.
Sky TV: very limited selection of channels to watch so not worth the bother for me.
The room had a stale odour, was a mish-mash of cheap furnishings, bed was too soft but at least clean. Seriously, it needs a good overhaul.

If you like a bath, bring your own plug (there was none). Also no anti slip mat so although the shower had plenty of hot water, I felt unsafe standing in the slippery bath to shower.

They advertise they have wifi but don't tell you it's at an extra cost. At the tariffs they charge, they should include at least 50MB free per night. That's what I got at another backpacker and there I paid $55 per night; no TV but it was a better room. Downtown Backpackers also charge you an extra $20 key security, which you recover in cash, so be prepared for the extra time / fiddle when checking out.

You have to travel to find food or entertainment if you don't want to eat at their bistro, which I didn't. I suggest you get a bus to Courtenay Place from the terminal. I think it was a No. 1 or 2 bus which will cost $2.50 each way. There you'll find lots of eateries (at a plaza near the movies - ask the bus driver to alert you to the stop). The Satay Noodle House make a divine laksa. There was also other Asian, Indian, a Wendys icecream & others.

Not terribly impressed with this place. Services a huge number of travellers, has an efficient kitchen and large dining room. But not much of a 'meeting fellow travellers' vibe. If you want a place to stopover for the night after/before catching the ferry or the train, this is OK. But if you want a cool base to explore Wellington for a few days, look for a smaller hostel. No free perks, no atmosphere and no character.

My wife flew in to spend a relaxing weekend in Wellington, and needed a budget accommodation for a Saturday night during a very busy weekend for the city (WOW going on, plus a big football match). The staff were very helpful and responsive, and were able to put us into a room that worked just great for us.

The location is really excellent -- quite central with the waterfront and Cuba street within walking distance, and with public transportation practically at the door.

Our room was a standard double that shared a bath and a kitchen facility with two other rooms. (It seems like it was originally sort of a 3 room "apartment"). Everything was clean and in good order -- and the kitchen well equipped. The room itself was spacious and the bed comfortable. They have lots of different rooming options to suit every need and budget.

Potential guests should remember the building is one of the older art deco buildings in Wellington, so if you're looking for an antiseptic, characterless hotel this isn't it. But if you're looking for a cool place to stay that's part of the history of Wellington, then you've found the right place.

I'd have to say that (for us) one of the most notable plusses of staying here was the great staff. They were knowledgeable, helpful and made the experience even more positive.

If you're looking for budget accommodation in Wellington that has character, great location and helpful staff, look no further.

Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Talk to the staff for guidance -- they know their stuff.

After coming back from 8 weeks travelling and staying in hotels in the centre of the city, we found that the Downtown Backpackers was excellent value for money, for example we stayed in a hotel in Times Square, New York, a buliding of similar vintage, but a larger room $1800.000 for 3 nights, breakfast extra. compare that to this hotel for $216.00 for 2 night including a cooked breakfast. We found everyone very helpful, the room, newly painted and tidy, the beds were comfortable and it was very handy to the station and amenities down town., what more could you ask for

Stayed in 6 person room. Only had to share with two people on one of my two nights. The dining room was cozy. Liked the huge kitchen for guests. Inquired about internet access-no one told me I could connect to the free wireless, but figured it out on my own. No soap in bathroom, no towels provided - just an FYI. Breakfast to pre-order was a very reasonable price - didn't try it though.

Downtown was our only choice for great location for the interislander and to walk into the city. The train station s hop and skip away, which houses a new world supermarket for bits and bobs and McDonalds is around the corner for those late night cravings. The reception is 24/7 and the staff are very nice and can help you book activities and transport. We have stayed here twice and we opted for twin rooms both times. The room is spacious with a set of bunks and a wash basin and bench and the room has an interconnected bathroom, shared with the other twin room next door. This didnt bother us.They could do with an upgrade in the facilities, but it was all clean enough. The kitchen is industrial and is adequate and the cafe in the dining room offer great coofee and alternative breakfast/lunch/dinner options for those who fancy a cheap meal. Didnt really have time to go into the bar, but you do get a voucher for a discount/BOGOF drink. Overall a great place to hang out and rest your head. Wellington is Awesome!
