Wellington Zoo is a great for families to visit. Not too overwhelmingly big but nice half day activity. Well kept animals, nice staff and some special things like watching vets to work is interesting for all age visitors. And a bug bug plus is the Mojo Cafe! The best coffee in town :-)

Wellington Zoo has been a favourite place to come for our family. We always enjoy the chimpazee talk/show. The setting is very nice and it is a good size to get around for all ages.

It happened to be a very wet day when we (grandmother + grandson) visited the Wellington Zoo, but the experience was not spoiled because of the rain. There were many places to shelter, fewer people than a 'normal' day and the staff were super-friendly. The interesting talks about the animals were not cancelled because it was wet, and there were plenty of opportunities to ask questions about the animals. The presenters were well informed and gave digestible and interesting presentations i.e. not just strings of facts that you can't remember.
I would thoroughly recommend a day at this small (obviously on a world scale) but enjoyable zoo.

Went to the zoo on the Wellington open day. Am glad as I dont think it would have been worth the price of full admission. It is clean and well laid out but I thought the variety of animals was disappointing. There are so many better zoos in the world I have been to. However if you were taking small children they would get quite a thrill, and being small it wouldn't take long to get around before they got tired and bored.
The tiger was probably the most exciting animal and the monkeys and chimps were active at least, but it was pretty ho hum.
