Found this a great museum - well laid out, varied exhibits - the afternoon there passed very quickly.

“outstanding museum to learn about New Zealand and free”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 28, 2013

This outstanding museum helps you learn all about New Zealand, its unique wildlife with flightless birds and no native animals but bats, skeletons and model of relatively recently extinct moa, earthquakes including ability to feel one, and excellent Maori section, and sample Maori meeting houses, the treaty of Waitanga that reads differently in English and Maori, and birds many of which became fightless in absence of mammalian predators including the kiwi etc. There are some simulated ride experiences of dangerous activities and oceans at an extra cost. Many interactive exhibits. A very informative museum and fun as well.

“Interesting museum”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 27, 2013

My first visit here, and found it spacious, and uncluttered - room to wander around and absorb. Some of the displays were very interesting, such as the Wearable Arts, although we didn't attend the special Aztec's exhibition.

Highlight was certainly the Golden Day's audio and visual show. As you enter the 'shop' and take a seat at the back, you are transported to New Zealand's history, the visual film is supported by a large array of props that come 'alive' at the right time, this was very well done. I think it was about a 5min presentation, but may have been a bit longer, but as you were sitting it wasn't a problem.

All in all, I found Te Papa interesting, coffee was good, and the staff fantastic and informative when I had a few questions. Coat and shopping bags were good to hand in, as I really wouldn't have wanted to carry them around, as it was warm inside.

Certainly well worth the visit when in Wellington.

“For a rainy day”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 27, 2013

This museum is very expansive. They try to tell the story of New Zealand from the beginning of time until now. There is everything from animals to volcanos to modern exhibits. The price is right as the entry is free. The location is right as it is in the middle of the tourist area in the harbor. My rating would probably be a bit higher if I was a museum lover but, sadly, I am not.

“Cant compare to Auckland War Museum”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 27, 2013

While Te Papa is a great attraction for Wellington we enjoyed the Auckland war museum far more as found Te Papa displays a little hard to navigate and their arts section maybe not as in depth as Auckland
Well worth a look but spend at least a half day and check out the Art collection at top..wonderful!
