Owner description: ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington City. Affectionately referred to as a hidden gem ZEALANDIA received international acclaim for the groundbreaking predator free 8.6km fence. Since the completion of the fence in 1999 ZEALANDIA has brought a number of native birds, reptiles and wildlife back from the brink of extinction where they now roam freely through the 225 hectare valley. A visit to ZEALANDIA is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a must for anyone visiting Wellington. There are a number treks to saunter, suitable for any fitness level. Alternatively step back in time with our interactive exhibition center or take a load off at the atmospheric Rata Café.

“Take your time to enjoy”
Reviewed July 10, 2014

We had an annual membership when we lived in Wellington and we visited regularly. Entry prices have recently been reduced to more reasonable levels and I would recommend spending at least half a day here.

It is a special place with lots to see if you take your time. If you rush around you won't get the best experience...need to walk slowly, listen to the birds, try to get into a quieter area where they have the bird feeders and you'll see lots.

We also went on a night tour with a very knowledgeable guide and saw kiwis up close which was amazing.

“Fantastic dusk tour despite no kiwi's”
Reviewed July 5, 2014

We went on the dusk evening tour after persistent heavy rain and thought it might even be cancelled as evening weather forecast dubious, however, it wasn't and we had a great time. We caught the bus there and back from Wellington centre which was very easy and reasonable price. Guide was friendly and very knowledgable. Sanctuary was beautiful and many amazing wildlife experiences especially sounds and calls. First introduction to weta, glow-worms and other New Zealand wildlife. We didn't see any kiwi but heard about 6 of them, male and female. Will not disappoint.

“Must see in Wellington!”
Reviewed June 30, 2014

Enjoy the wildlife of New Zealand without mammals. I highly recommend the night tour! The rangers are very knowledgeable and the grounds are beautiful.

“Unique Experience”
Reviewed June 30, 2014

I have never seen such a wonderful example of where nature gets an opportunity to strike back at man's destruction of a habitat in such a manner and in the middle of a modern city. Where once the hills were laid bare in the name of "progress", the forest, birdlife and tuatara are reclaiming their domain. What wonderful vision to embark on establishing Zealandia to what it is today. The education centre is very interesting - the film that shows regularly reflecting the history of the site is wonderful. One wonders how Zealandia may look in 500 years from now.

“Weather needs to be good”
Reviewed June 30, 2014

My son & I went on the buggy walk morning (Wednesday's) when admission is half price.
As the weather was good it made for a pleasent walk listening to the bird song, the sun filtering through the trees, but the ground was still quite wet underfoot in places and we slipped a few times.
We stuck to the easy walking/wheelchair/buggy access routes which are suitable for all ages and fitness types.
We thoroughly enjoyed lunch in the onsite cafe afterwards, and they had a great selection for mum & bub + plently of room for play & changing facilities
