Owner description: ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington City. Affectionately referred to as a hidden gem ZEALANDIA received international acclaim for the groundbreaking predator free 8.6km fence. Since the completion of the fence in 1999 ZEALANDIA has brought a number of native birds, reptiles and wildlife back from the brink of extinction where they now roam freely through the 225 hectare valley. A visit to ZEALANDIA is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a must for anyone visiting Wellington. There are a number treks to saunter, suitable for any fitness level. Alternatively step back in time with our interactive exhibition center or take a load off at the atmospheric Rata Café.

“Lots of local fauna, lots of walking, beautiful scenery”
Reviewed December 16, 2013 via mobile

The scenery is really enjoyable. It is possible to walk all of the main tracks in about two hours. You will see many birds and they have a few of the lizards and other hard-to-spot specimens in cases to ensure you see one. Birds are baited in areas to encourage sightings. A beautiful walk, even without the unique animals. The gift store has a slightly more varied and unusual selection from the general run of gift store items in NZ.

“Huge park with lots to see”
Reviewed December 16, 2013

This giant park is well fenced to keep out non-native pests such as stoats and rats. So when you enter, you may be asked to open your bag so they can check you're not bringing any pests in.
But once you're in, you have a wide variety of paths to choose from. The park is all about birdlife, native trees, lizards and giant insects. You can do a guided tour or just walk around yourself. While the main footpath is paved and good for wheelchairs/strollers, the paths going deeper into the forest/park are sandy/gravel and sometimes steep.
We saw lots of birds and not just around the feeders, so if you're into birding: take a camera as you're likely to get some good shots. The staff give you a little flyer with what birds/wildlife you may encounter when you enter.
And if you're thirsty/hungry after your walk: there is a nice restaurant that does great food, from sandwiches and paninis to burgers and lamb.

“this place is big enough for a whole day (but also good for 2 hours)”
Reviewed December 13, 2013

We went to this park thinking we would see a kiwi. Besides the locals we didn't get to see one. Then again, in this park they try to bring back the nature into the state it was years and years ago. Since kiwi's are nocturnal they don't roam around in the park during a blazing hot day in november. We've seen plenty of other birds though. The nature is nice too and well proctected by a big fence (wall) against other non local annimals like cats, mice, rats etc.

The park is good for a couple of hours, a stroll around the lake is nice and you see and hear loads of birds. The main walkway is paved and good for people in a wheelchair or with a stroller etc. There are plenty of little walkpaths that are steep and loose gravel. They are good to get away from the crowds and you will get to see more wildlife.
As said, the park is a lot bigger then you would expect so it's easy to spent a day there. The restaurant offers good views, shade and sun seating available. Good burgers and other food.

All in all, we enjoyed our little time there.

“Amazing place”
Reviewed December 10, 2013

This is an amazing place, we took 2 hours to go around the main track, as we couldn't get up high (windy). We saw 2 adult Tuatara and 3 babies which I have never seen at the zoo before. If kids were older would definitely go back at night for kiwi experience. very cool exhibition centre as well. Well worth the time and so close to town!
