Owner description: ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington City. Affectionately referred to as a hidden gem ZEALANDIA received international acclaim for the groundbreaking predator free 8.6km fence. Since the completion of the fence in 1999 ZEALANDIA has brought a number of native birds, reptiles and wildlife back from the brink of extinction where they now roam freely through the 225 hectare valley. A visit to ZEALANDIA is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a must for anyone visiting Wellington. There are a number treks to saunter, suitable for any fitness level. Alternatively step back in time with our interactive exhibition center or take a load off at the atmospheric Rata Café.

“nature, without the effort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2013

Even if you're not too fussed about wildlife I'd still give this place a go. There's loads of weird and wonderful birds to see. It's a decent walk if you go beyond the dam so be sure to take a few hours. I didn't go into the exhibition as I thought it was already a pricey day out. I went midweek in winter which was great as I hardly saw anyone else all day.

Thank you for your kind review. It's nice to hear you explored the valley.
Exhibition pricing is currently under review and is likely to be more accessible in time for summer.

“Sorocco”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2013

We went to see Sorocco on an evening visit. We enjoyed the talk by volunteers and videos they showed. then we walked up a track to the enclosure where Sorocco lives. We could'nt touch him ( which was a shame ) but got a very clear view through the glass.I took photos and it was well worth it!

Thank you for your review Janet. It sounds like you had a wonderful time meeting Sirocco the kakapo. He is only here until Sep 3 but is likely to return. It's an amazing opportunity to see these rare birds, only 124 left and all the others on protected offshore islands.

“Bird lovers paradise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2013

This really is a bird lovers paradise, however while bird watching is not our normal pass time we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
We saw many of the native bird species;
-Takahe
-Hihi
-Saddleback (Tieke)
-Kaka (they have a cheeky poser character)
-Bellbird (Korimako)
-Tui
-North Island Robin (Toutouwai)
-Blackbird
We also saw the Wellington Green Gecko's and the Tuatara

We took loads of pictures.
If you catch the Cable Car to the top of the hill there is a free shuttle that takes you straight to the Zealandia entrance.
We only did the outside sanctuary (it was a beautiful day outside), it cost us about $18 p/p and was worth every cent. We didn't do the inside exhibition which cost and extra $10.
Go and do it, you wont regret it!

“A pleasant walk.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2013

A nice afternoon walk - lots of native bush, but not as many birds as I expected. You can choose the track you take - and so how strenuous or long your walk is. The boat ride was also pleasant. Overall a pleasant day - but underwhelmed and not my favourite day out in Wellington.

Thanks for your review. I'm glad you had an enjoyable day. We recommend people take their time and let the nature come to them, listen for movements and wait to see what's there. Zealandia is a wild place and quite different to an aviary or zoo - we have free guided walks and species talks to help connect you with the nature that is flourishing in the valley.

“Takahe!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2013

This is a proper opportunity for city travellers to experience NZ wildlife up close without the long trip into the wilds to do so. To see all these magnificent birds up close - we saw (on a grey winters day) kaka, tui, black robins, tuataras and best of all, two takahe plodding about metres away - is to have an inkling of how NZ used to be before predators took away so many of the birds. It is a huge success story for developing a park in an urban area, as well. Finally, the exhibition inside is very informative, and the guides helpful.

Thank you so much for the great review. It is lovely to hear you enjoyed your visit so much and appreciated the work being done at Zealandia. We are very lucky to have a takahe pair - only around 260 remain today.

A small correction is that we have North Island robins living in the valley. The black robin is not present. The robins are very inquisitive and 'friendly' - it is wonderful to meet them here.
