Owner description: ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington City. Affectionately referred to as a hidden gem ZEALANDIA received international acclaim for the groundbreaking predator free 8.6km fence. Since the completion of the fence in 1999 ZEALANDIA has brought a number of native birds, reptiles and wildlife back from the brink of extinction where they now roam freely through the 225 hectare valley. A visit to ZEALANDIA is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a must for anyone visiting Wellington. There are a number treks to saunter, suitable for any fitness level. Alternatively step back in time with our interactive exhibition center or take a load off at the atmospheric Rata Café.

Lovely walking trails and wonderful weather to walk.

We took a cab from the city center. We came with our 2 kids and they loved the walk too.

Great place to enjoy nature, see some birds, and get a good walkout for the legs.

My husband and I visited Wellington close to the start of our first trip to NZ from the UK. We intended to go to the Botanic Gardens after going up the cable car, but decided to spend the morning at Zealandia and go to the gardens later in the day. In the end, we spent all day at Zealandia and never made the gardens! We caught the free shuttle bus from the cable car terminus and arrived just in time for a guided walk - this proved to be an excellent introduction to the site, to NZ wildlife and to the problems faced by those who are trying to conserve and re-introduce native species, albeit within the protection of a predator-proof fence. We saw loads of birds that were new to us, including Takahe, plus a bonus of several tuatara - I've wanted to see those since I read about them as a child! At the end of the day we caught the last shuttle bus back and were dropped off in the city centre. Even if you're not particularly interested in the minutiae of wildlife species, this is a wonderful place to amble along miles of good paths surrounding 2 old reservoirs; wonderful views especially from the upper lake. Close to the city centre, but free from all the traffic noise and hustle and bustle - very relaxing as well as informative. Very good visitor facilities as well. I highly recommend Zealandia as worth visiting for several hours (on a sunny day!)

Thank you for the wonderful review. It's great to hear you made the most of your visit and enjoyed a full day exploring. The free shuttle can make it very easy to get around, and the public buses are also a pretty good alternative. I'm glad you visited at the start of your trip to NZ, I'm sure it helped you feel a deeper appreciation for the natural assets of NZ.

I went to Zealandia because my New Zealand god daughter wanted to go there with her four year old. A friend tried to persuade us to go to the Otari plant museum instead as it is free, but we decided on Zealandia. Although it drizzled the whole time we were there, we loved the walks, the birds, tuataras, geckos etc. The little girl loved all the displays. We ended our time there with a boat ride back, and a snack and coffee at the restaurant.

Zealandia was extraordinary! It takes lots of time to fully grasp all that is happening here. We hiked on many of the trails for hours getting to see lots of birds in their own habitats. Took lots of photos and loved being able to get so close to so many. Especially the fragile and endangered species. The inside portion of the project is also fascinating and we spent an hour in that as well on our return trip to fully experience the history, even getting to see their extinct "Moa"! I bought a tee shirt to really remember the experience and just loved all of the work they are doing to keep New Zealand's treasures. Great for all ages.

We were lucky to visit here on a sunny Wellington day. The exhibition centre is a credit to those with the foresight to set this project in motion. So very informative and thought provoking. The cafe is well set out and well patronised. The setting up through a valley is a perfect haven for birds, tuataras etc., all protected by well thought out fencing. Notices at strategic places as well as feeding stations add to this excellent facility.
