Owner description: ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington City. Affectionately referred to as a hidden gem ZEALANDIA received international acclaim for the groundbreaking predator free 8.6km fence. Since the completion of the fence in 1999 ZEALANDIA has brought a number of native birds, reptiles and wildlife back from the brink of extinction where they now roam freely through the 225 hectare valley. A visit to ZEALANDIA is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a must for anyone visiting Wellington. There are a number treks to saunter, suitable for any fitness level. “Great Educational Facility”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

Our 6 year old Gradaughter had a wonderful trip to Zealandia and all holidays she has talked about many things from the stoats to the traps to the fences. She loved it and it was a huge success we would recoomend a visit to this amazing Wellington facility.

“Nothing like your usual zoo/wildlife park”
Reviewed January 10, 2013

They have worked so hard at this place over so many years to turn back the clock and provide an environment for many troubled species. It is like walking around Jurassic park, as the shag's fly over they could almost be teradactyls. Popped in for an hour, stayed four and would have done longer if we could. Didn't even get as far as doing the guided walk or timed bird feedings, just immersed ourselves in the place. Sit quietly, open your eyes and ears and watch these beautiful birds in their natural environment, The bird song gallery near the start of the walks is worth a go, many of the birds you hear way before you see them and their call is quite distinct. There's lizards and insects for some variety if you get tired of the birds or beautiful wild bush. Wished we had some binoculars, but often the birds will come close by anyway if you're patient and we had a robin come within a foot of us trying to dismantle a straw hat. Loved it.

“Beautiful sanctuary”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

We did the exhibition and sanctuary combo. Do the exhibition first to find out information and history of the sanctuary and about some of the wildlife you may find in the sanctuary. Do take the guided tour, we saw so much wildlife that we would've missed if we didn't go with the guide. It's free so take advantage! If we had walked on our own we would not have seen much, some of these birds are hard to see unless you know where to look. The food at the cafe was not good at all! We took free shuttle from the top of the cable cars.

Our guided Walk and Talk is a great way to start a visit. Species talks are also on offer.

“Inspired vision, deserves our support”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

Zealandia is an easy way to find out about New Zealand's native wildlife and the problems that introduced species have caused. It is perfect if you will not have time to visit one of New Zealand's island sanctuaries during your visit. The vision to fence the entire valley to exclude predators was visionary. Great indoor interpretation centre too, well laid out, informative and thought-provoking.

This place deserves your support and is a great half-day trip.

“Hidden Treasure”

This was my first visit to Zealandia. We had a great day, what a wonderful experience! It was a little pricey, putting me off visiting again anytime soon.. but you must visit at least once. Loved it!
