Owner description: ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington City. Affectionately referred to as a hidden gem ZEALANDIA received international acclaim for the groundbreaking predator free 8.6km fence. Since the completion of the fence in 1999 ZEALANDIA has brought a number of native birds, reptiles and wildlife back from the brink of extinction where they now roam freely through the 225 hectare valley. A visit to ZEALANDIA is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a must for anyone visiting Wellington. There are a number treks to saunter, suitable for any fitness level. Alternatively step back in time with our interactive exhibition center or take a load off at the atmospheric Rata Café.

The staff and volunteers at Zealandia have already created a space in which introduced animals have been eliminated, and are now working to make it free of introduced plants as well. It is a great chance to see an incredible variety of native animals, birds and insects roaming around their native habitat.

The information center has very interesting displays about New Zealand's indigenous flora and fauna, including a moving statue of a Giant Moa.

I found the display and video about the impact of humans in New Zealand to be a bit emotionally manipulative. I understand that this is a very important issue, but my wife and I were both a bit annoyed that we were being emotionally blackmailed into supporting it. The other displays provide more than enough factual information to convince visitors of the dangers faced by native animals and plants.

Our first impression of your company was the driver that picked us up. To start with he drove by with out us, then on return 1 hour later he did not open any doors or introduce himself, we had to ask if we were on the right bus. This also happened to the next two clients getting in the vehicle. He didn't explain where we were going, how long it would take or give any commentary on the way. His driving was erratic and braking was late to the point where the vehicle skidded on two separate occasions. The return trip was no better, we felt as if we were in the way and ruining his day.
We were informed of the bag check on entry, which we appreciate is necessary and think is a wonderful idea, but we were to find no staff to check our belongings and left to walk through without a search. I feel that the whole experience would have been a lot better if all staff had been involved, not just the front desk staff that take your payment.

The sanctuary itself was great, I particularly liked the bird song area where one can push buttons and hear birds of New Zealand all at once, and to have a wetlands in the middle of a city is fantastic.

Thank you for your feedback GWNZ, your comments have been passed on to the appropriate members of staff.

Our shuttle drivers are trained to be more welcoming and professional than you’ve described and it’s unusual to hear such a complaint so we will look into what went wrong there.

The bag check is a self-check with assistance from a volunteer host during busy times of the week. Perhaps our admissions staff could have picked up on your uncertainty or described the process more clearly – the amount of information they can deliver is limited at busy times but we do try to convey the essential bits.

I’m glad the majority of your experience here was a positive one though, I agree it’s pretty cool to have all this so close to the city, and I hope the better memories are the ones that stay with you.

the indoor displays were very professional and up to international standards. the natural walks and paths gave a good contrast to the indoor displays. the highlight was the encounter with the Kaka birds

We decided to go to Zealandia because it was such a nice day and we got to the top of the cable car and realised that there was a free shuttle bus from there. We arrived at 3pm with only 2 hours left so had to rush around but we still weren't disappointed.

We got to see loads of amazing birds (including Takahe and Kaka) plus some lizards. It's amazing how up and close you were able to get to some of them given that they are basically in the wild!

We would definitely recommend.

This is an interesting and well run sanctuary. I particularly liked the video showing the changes made to the environment over the past centuries. A beautiful setting and great cafe.
