Owner description: ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington City. Affectionately referred to as a hidden gem ZEALANDIA received international acclaim for the groundbreaking predator free 8.6km fence. Since the completion of the fence in 1999 ZEALANDIA has brought a number of native birds, reptiles and wildlife back from the brink of extinction where they now roam freely through the 225 hectare valley. A visit to ZEALANDIA is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a must for anyone visiting Wellington. There are a number treks to saunter, suitable for any fitness level. Alternatively step back in time with our interactive exhibition center or take a load off at the atmospheric Rata Café.

Recently I had the chance of visiting Zealandia for a day trip. Being the first time there I decided to go for both the exhibition and sanctuary visit. Being a person from out of town, I had no way of travelling around unless by piblic transport.
The free public shuttle from outside information centre and Te Papa was absolutely fabulous. The driver of shuttle was really friendly and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride.
I found the staff to be really helpful and friendly, especially when buying the ticket and opening the electronic gate for me as it was not working properly.
The valley was full of wildlife and various kinds of birds were in sight, including Kaka, Takahi, shags etc. The various bird feeding times were something that's not to be missed and all the volunteers were really helpful and happy to answer any question that you have. It was overall a wonderful visit, there were various tracks to suit people of all ages and ability.
The exhibition itself was very informative about the various wildlife in the valley and importance of conversation.
Although the ticket was a bit pricy but it was well worth it, especially the proceeds going towards conservation of the land.

Wow, what NZ has done to try to bring back what was destroyed by the Maori and European settlers had me in awe! Take the tour through the center. What an incredible place where endangered species of plants, birds, animals indigenous to NZ are all thriving. I learned so much here!

30$ for a boring walk?
They have a big kiwi bird on the cover of the brochure. Guess what you don't see in the park. They just talk about trees. ZzzzzZz....

I’m sorry to see that you didn’t enjoy your visit.

For $28.50 you would have had access to both our sanctuary valley and our indoor exhibition.

RE your comment that we “just talk about trees” – I’m not sure how you formed this opinion as we are restoring a complete ecosystem including many endangered native birds and reptiles. We also focus on telling the larger story of why New Zealand’s natural heritage is so unique. From the other comments you can see here it’s clear the vast majority of visitors understand this so I would be interested in hearing more about your visit.

As part of your entry price you are free to join daily talks on four different iconic species and multiple “Walk & Talks” that introduce you to the valley as a whole. There are multiple feeder stations where bird sightings are more frequent and wandering volunteer guides who will help you to make the most of your visit, pointing out tuatara and so on.

We offer over 30km of trails to choose from and our short “recommended route” takes you past many interesting points where you can see and learn more about our remarkable native species.

At Zealandia the animals are not presented to you (save for a couple of breeding enclosures). They are living wild so you need to take it slow and pause often to appreciate your surroundings and let the nature come to you.

We are home to over 100 little spotted kiwi, which our brochure is very clear about being nocturnal creatures you may see on a night tour. We are a vital “lifeboat” for these birds and your admission fee goes towards protecting these and many other threatened species.

This sanctuary is filled with hiking trails for all fitness levels, with beautiful scenery and wildlife. We loved our day here so much we became members because we plan to visit often.

Had a good time - good walks, bush & native birds etc. Saw a tuatara & Kakas getting fed - interesting and interactive. Price quite high. Goes to a good cause though!
