Arriving for only two nights and one full day of city sight seeing location was critical, Novotels center downtown location was perfect. Was arrived via bus from the airport, dropped off directly behind the hotel via a tunnel. The lobby was small but with a friendly staff. The rooms where we'll appointed, but nothing to scream about.

The best recommendation I have is the perfect location of the hotel and the ability to roam all around town with efficiency.

Located in the very center of Wellington with all the shops you could wish for - all the attractions of the city close enough to be within walking distance. The hotel room was of a high standard and was clean and well maintained, wilst the food in the restaurant was reasoably priced. Use the lift down to Lambton Quay accessed through bar, the staff l had contact with where most helpful.

The Novotel Wellington was a reasonable place overall. Parking was quite confusing on arrival, with no real clear place to drop off bags, etc, - apparently you could pull up directly out the front to unload but this wasn't clear (or wasn't when you arrive after dark in the rain) as it looked like a bus-stop. The counter-staff were friendly and helpful at all times, but I didn't see any sort bellhop or similar to help with bags; it's not that luxurious a place I guess, though they did offer valet parking (at $28 a night). In fact it was not overly luxurious in general, e.g., the common areas were quite bland and sometimes a bit tired looking, but at least they were clean and nothing offensive.

The room was similar to the common areas, not overly luxurious or big, but alright, and pretty reasonable for the price. There was no real view from the ninth level; I was on The Terrace side, but perhaps on other side of hotel you'd have a view over the city. Individual control on the heating/aircon worked, although it was a bit stiff and hard to operate so you need to be firm with it. The entertainment unit in the room was a bit confusing to use, e.g., using the line-in to play an iPod through the TV took a lot of fiddling and most people wouldn't figure it out; on the other hand this isn't an option in many places, so I guess we shouldn't complain too much.

The bathroom was okay, a bit small, but usable. The shower was in the bathtub, and the tub itself had nasty lip on it meaning you couldn't rest your foot on the edge. The toilet ended up behind the open bathroom door, which was a little unusual and at times inconvenient, but just an indication of the compact size I suppose. The shower was pretty good once you got into it. There was no fan but it did have vent at least (perhaps there was a small fan behind that, but if so it was very quiet), so the bathroom fogged up a bit during showers, but not as badly as many places. Toilet smells also benefit from having a fan, especially in fully enclosed bathrooms like this.

There was a dangerous door to the 'fuse' cabinet which had broken hinges and fell off when I went to open it - it would have broken stuff like a phone or iPad if I'd had it sitting underneath on the desk at the time. This is really quite a serious safety issue. Incidentally, if you're wondering why I was looking in the fuse cupboard, it was part of my search for the in-room safe. My searches suggested there was in fact no safe in the room, despite the room information clearly saying there was one in every room; well that is unless it was amazingly well hidden as I did look pretty much everywhere.

The bed was soft, softer than I tend to like, but comfortable enough, and it did seem to have sufficient support below the soft top. The pillows were also soft and pretty flat (yet again - I don't understand why so many pillows in NZ are so flat), but piling two on top of each other was comfortable enough, so I slept quite well. The mini-bar was expensive.

There was a small gym in the building with just a few pieces of basic exercise equipment. There was no pool or substantial gym equipment available, however apparently you can access these through local facilities, but I think at an extra cost.

The buffet breakfast was very good, one of the better ones I've seen, and I was able to get it very cheap with the room booking (only $2 or $3 extra a day). I may have just got a lucky deal, but it's definitely worth checking this when you book. There was a big range of cold and hot options, and a cook on hand who will cook fresh things like omelettes. I was able to eat so heartily that I only required a couple of pieces of fruit for lunch.

Access to Lambton Quay via an elevator and the shopping centre below was easy enough, although there are time limits on it, so if coming back late at night you'd have to come around via The Terrace, which would be very inconvenient if on foot. Having said which the elevator was accessible even on a public holiday when most of Wellington was closed, including said shopping centre.

There seemed to be quite a lot of middle class looking families staying there while I was in, so this is probably a bit of an indication of the type of demographic this hotel typically serves. If you want luxury go elsewhere, but for a reasonably priced midrange place to crash in Wellington for a few days this is fine. However I would say make sure you don't pay too much (I think I paid around $130 a night) as going much beyond this would start to lose out in the positive value for money stakes. The good cheap breakfast manages to tip it over into an overall four.

We had a very short stay, but the location was prime! We walked to dinner by the water (through a clever elevator access to the waterfront level) and to many of the local sites. The room was spacious, modern, quiet and clean, with lots of electric plugs! (Small detail but delightful). We didn't eat at the hotel, but the small restaurant seemed good for breakfast. We had rented a car so we did valet...hotel was easy to find and easy to park.

This is our second time staying here. Excellent Hotel for travelling with children. They have a very good children's menu which is available as room service or in the restaurant. The location is fantastic - a lift into Lambton Quay and parking off The Terrace. Easy access to the motorways. A very nice touch is that if you stay Saturday night they will organise a late check out for you.

Great location, convenient to shopping, the freeway, the harbour and many event locations. Clean room with remarkably comfortable bed. Got the booking at a terrific rate on hotels.com, and even got a harbourside view room. Expensive parking. Service always delivered with a smile, but very spotty: room was missing many amenities I expected, like a coffee plunger, bottled water, moisturizing lotion, morning newspaper. All were available upon request though the newspaper they asked if I wanted upon check in didn't arrive the following morning. Took several calls to get a coffee plunger and then the carafe was the wrong size for the holder so it fell out and broke. The final invoice was wrong and the desk clerk couldn't explain or fix it. Minor annoyances, I would certainly stay here again, knowing that I would need to keep a good eye out.
