“Definately would not go back.”
Reviewed September 6, 2009

Stayed for two nights as a birthday present from my partner. Had always wanted to stay at the Museum Hotel and was extremely disappointed with the quality and service. The room we were booked into was nothing like what was promised on the website. The room had a tiny pathetic view of the harbor, the bed was queen not king, the bath towels were nothing close to oversized and luxurious, the room was tired and dated, we could hear the laundry through the walls, the traffic outside and word for word what people passing by on the street below were saying. We asked to move rooms, the staff weren't overly receptive to this request but did say we could look at the only other room free in the hotel, which we did. We ended up taking the room, however it was only marginally better. The room appeared a lot newer, but the view out of the large picture window was of the gym, needless to say we kept the curtains closed the whole weekend, and the noise from the gym could also be heard in the room, which wasn't pleasant. We ordered the breakfast both mornings which turned up later than the specified time, was cold and missing ordered items. We also ordered in room dessert one night, we were told there would be a 35 minute wait which was fine, after an hour we received a call to inform us that one of the desserts was no longer available but they would bring the other up right away. 20 minutes later it was delivered by a rude boy and no apology. The dessert was delivered split all over the plate and what was meant to be a selection of 3 creme brulee actually contained 2 that were exactly the same.
When it came time to check out we expressed our disappointment to the girl on the desk and she honestly couldn't have cared less.
Over all an extremely disappointing experience and we won't be back. We should have listened to a number of our friends who have stayed and not enjoyed it.

Although my wife and I live just north of Wellington, we decided to treat ourselves to a night away from our baby and sample the great looking meal options that were on offer at the Hippopotamus restaurant as part of "Wellington on a Plate".

We arrived on a Friday evening to a very happening check in desk that is part joined to the downstairs bar. A jazz band was playing and the mood was great! - Check in staff were very friendly.

Our room was part of the new apartment side of the Hotel so was very new and presented well with a nice welcome letter accompanied by some chocolates that didn't last long! - the fridge was well stocked and one thing that impressed me the most was a super well stocked drawer of almost anything you may have forgotten, from a toothbrush to pandol. The Pillow menu was a nice touch and there is nothing like a super large shower and shower head to top off a great room.

We were booked in to the Hotels French Restaurant (Hippopotamus) and to be honest as it was part of the Hotel I didn't hold much hope that it would do French food much justice. However to my delight I absolutely loved everything from the friendly French staff to the mouth-watering snails and duck. I am very fussy with wine matches and have to say these were amongst the best I had been suggested. I would totally recommend this Restaurant in its own right to any of my friends.

I could go on however I'm sure you get the picture, I only wish I had discovered such a great place to get away (so close to home) earlier!

We visited the Museum for a special treat before our next baby arrival. We arrived and went up to our lovely spacious room. The views were beautiful and the room was the size of a small apartment. We went to the Hippo for Dinner it was absolutely lovely, the staff were very helpful and the food was delicious! We were so full other our main meal we ended up ordering our desert in our rooms, hand delivered by one of the waiters! It was a special nice in a very cool hotel. Overall we had a wonderful experience a 8.5/10. We will definitely visit again asap. Regards. T.

We stayed one night at the Museum Hotel during an overnight transit stop in Wellington. We took a shuttle bus from the airport which only cost $20 for the two of us (about 15 min drive). The location is great, across the street from Te Papa museum and the waterfront area. The waterfront promenade around Oriental Bay and the walking tracks up to the Mt. Victoria lookout make for great places to run or walk, which we did. There are lots of shops, restaurants, bars, supermarkets, and fast food joints within 5 minutes walk.

The Museum hotel is not your standard hotel, a bit quirky and offbeat, and it definitely exceeded our expectations. The service was excellent, with very quick, efficient, and painless check-in and check-out. Very proficient front desk staff who helped us out with all our queries.

The rooms are of high standard with modern quality furnishings and décor, bright, and spotlessly clean. The room was more like a self-contained apartment with a full kitchen – including a dishwasher and a washer/dryer! The king size bed was luxury but the flat screen TV (with Sky TV) was a bit small and mounted too low, making it difficult to see over the foot of the bed. The entire end wall was a picture window, but the only view we had was of a wall of the building next door. The bathroom was nice, with a big spa bath and separate shower. Our shower door was missing so the water flowed all over the bathroom floor which wasn’t good.

The rooms have WiFi internet, however it wasn’t free so we didn’t bother to hook up. We didn’t try most of the hotel facilities, however we had a look at the 2-lane lap pool and gym. The gym was small and basic, with a handful of somewhat dated Cybex cardio machines, an OK multi-gym, and a complete set of dumbbells – enough for a basic workout.

Overall, we had a great stay at the Museum Hotel – excellent rooms, excellent service, excellent location. Even though it represents just average value at a NZ$160/night, we would likely stay here again and would recommend it to other travellers. Likes: high quality rooms, excellent location. Dislikes: no shower door, low TV, no views, no free internet.

I've stayed at the Museum several times on business over the past three months. I love the bohemian quirky and arty feel of the hotel and the location is great. However, my experience with the rooms and staff has been inconsistent. Its a matter of luck which room (and staff you get). The residential apartment rooms are very comfortable - no criticism whatsoever. The other rooms seem a little tired and in need of a good makeover. On several occasions the quality control has been lacking having found a half empty paint pot in the bathroom, 2 half empty wine bottles near the tv on another visit and last time a dirty looking toilet roil which was basically unusable. On another visit my room was near the lift shaft and kept me awake all night - not great when I had a busy working day ahead. The staff at times seem ambivalent and not as professional as you'd expect from a good hotel. If you score a good room its a great place to stay.

Husband & I stayed for one night in a Chaffers Suite($275 incl bfast) and loved this hotel. This suite was on the 6th floor of the newer residential part of the hotel and has views out over the Chaffers Marina and Te Papa Museum. It really is a hotel room with a great compact wall kitchen with everything you would need to prepare and cook a meal. Supermarket is next door. It had a fantastic huge bath for 2(it did take a while to full). Breakfast was on the above average scale for hotel buffets but with a great view. We liked the art around the foyer and hallways and its old world charm. Great location for the events we had planned. Did not have much staff interaction but they all seemed friendly and helpful. Would stay again.
