I've stayed at the Museum several times on business over the past three months. I love the bohemian quirky and arty feel of the hotel and the location is great. However, my experience with the rooms and staff has been inconsistent. Its a matter of luck which room (and staff you get). The residential apartment rooms are very comfortable - no criticism whatsoever. The other rooms seem a little tired and in need of a good makeover. On several occasions the quality control has been lacking having found a half empty paint pot in the bathroom, 2 half empty wine bottles near the tv on another visit and last time a dirty looking toilet roil which was basically unusable. On another visit my room was near the lift shaft and kept me awake all night - not great when I had a busy working day ahead. The staff at times seem ambivalent and not as professional as you'd expect from a good hotel. If you score a good room its a great place to stay.

Husband & I stayed for one night in a Chaffers Suite($275 incl bfast) and loved this hotel. This suite was on the 6th floor of the newer residential part of the hotel and has views out over the Chaffers Marina and Te Papa Museum. It really is a hotel room with a great compact wall kitchen with everything you would need to prepare and cook a meal. Supermarket is next door. It had a fantastic huge bath for 2(it did take a while to full). Breakfast was on the above average scale for hotel buffets but with a great view. We liked the art around the foyer and hallways and its old world charm. Great location for the events we had planned. Did not have much staff interaction but they all seemed friendly and helpful. Would stay again.

The best part of the hotel is the plush, artistic and very unconventional decor of the lobby and common areas of the hotel - very appealing with lots of great artwork worth looking at.

The restaurant is also very good for dinner - though a bit on the pricey side. Breakfast tends to be very conventional, mainstream English. Again, in my opinion this is also a bit overpriced for what you get. If you like a healthy choice, then there's a token muesli bowl, but you can get some nice freshly squeezed orange juice (you guessed it - at an extra charge)

Now the rooms can be a real hit or miss - we usually stay here for company policy, and subjecto to availability we can get an upgrade to the suites in the residential wing. These are really wonderfully furnished. Very spacious, clean, elegant - we feel great staying on those.

But if you have bad luck, then you may be put up in a so-called Classic Room, which are a real disappointment. The size is very small, the bathroom tends to have broken fixtures, and it's all rather claustrophobic with often no view but into the dead-end hotel courtyard. The funny thing is you get both types of rooms for the same price, which makes the Classic Room a real rip-off.

The overall location is great, next door to the Museum (though once you've seen it, it doesn't offer much else inspiring for adult!), and great dining out choices at night. Our facourites: Sweet Mother's Kitchen on Courtenay Place (gobsmacking Louisiana food, that we end up eating there each time we are in Wellie) and Chow (fabulous innovative south-east Asian food).

Stayed in a room on first floor. Good size but furnishings tired & a little grubby. Hallway on first floor noticeably underventilated/stuffy. Lobby nice with very stylish art.

Wouldn't stay again. We stayed at the Copthorne hotel a few steps away in Oriental Bay a couple of months ago and it is a bit more expensive for a harbour view room but very much better as to standard of room.

Check in was good, free internet in loby always avaiable, room was good clean, bathroom was a bit tired but plently of hot water and towels.
Great location walking distance to attractions and resturants.
Hotel staff were friendly and helpful.
Would have been even better had it not rained every day (but that wasnt the hotels fault)

We stayed for two nights in a room overlooking the water/Te Papa. The room was spacious, the bed huge and luxurious, and the bathroom spotless.

Check-in was a bit slow, but apart from that the service was great.

The location is excellent - across the road from Te Papa (Museum of New Zealand) and within walking distance to shopping and restaurant areas, as well as a great supermarket.
