We had chosen this hotel because of it´s location- and it´s location is definitely perfect. From our second floor harbour view- room we had gorgeous views of te papa museum and sailing harbour, and all main sights and a lot of good restaurants are within easy walking distance.
Parking is convenient, receptionists are "strict" and helpful, but a bit away from being enthusiastic.
Room was comfortable, but with polluted floor cover in some parts. Cleaning of outside veranda´s floor unfortunatelly must have been forgotten by chambermaid- it was simply dirty.
Surprisingly when checking out a 2% surplus was charged when paying with Mastercard- quite strange and unusual for a 4star hotel.

We stayed In the hotel apartments which were modern. From the minute we arrived, it was apparent that this was not a service oriented hotel. There was no one there to take our bags. Also, in the afternoon, there was no concierge behind the desk. The hotel has an excellent restaurant called Hippopotamus; worth going to. The hotel is across the street from the harbor as well as TePapa Museum which is also excellent. The lobby is incredibly noisy. In keeping with the lack of service, the night before we left, we called for a wake-up call. It's a good thing that we had our own backup because we never got the call!

Thankyou for your general comments on my Hotel and especially your warm commendation of Hippopotamus, our fine dining restaurant. A great pity everything wasn't to the same standard on the day.
I am investigating our lobby service levels, as of course one of our Lobby Hosts should be present at the Concierge desk at all times. As for the wakeup call, that's inexcusable I'm trying to get to the bottom of how it happened.
If you pass this way again please make contact with me, as I would like to look after you personally.

Lovely hotel to stay at although the 2 concierges we encountered could be a little less serious. We were travelling on motorcycles maybe they didn't like the look of us after 10 days travelling. The check in personnel were very friendly and helpful. We retired to the in house restaurant and bar for brandy cocktails, which were made to perfection. Lovely looking furniture, although not made for comfort. The actual facilities in the room were great. Bathroom fantastic. Coffee machine in the room with espresso coffee or plunger coffee. Bath fizzes for the huge bath. Very relaxing. Loved our stay here.

Room Tip: If you want a view of the harbour, probably best to request one. Our room looked into the car park w...

I have stayed at Museum Hotel a number of times in the harbour view studios and it has become the hotel against which I judge all other hotels. Every part of this hotel is a work of art: From the lobby with all sorts of interesting and beautiful original pieces; to the corridors leading to the rooms on each floor; to the interior design of the rooms themselves, this place is stunning.
Also, don't miss the Hippopotamus flair cocktail bar, with colourful regency furniture and highly-skilled flair bartenders who write an original cocktail menu season to season and house a top selection of high-end spirits; every bit of this is class.
One time we did scrimp and took a lower-end room which put us on the other side of the hotel facing the brick wall and swimming pool, which wasn't so great: if you can, get a harbour view room. However, this hasn't affected my opinion of the place since I simply have never seen any other hotel like it. I highly recommend this as your place to stay in Wellington.

Room Tip: Get a harbour view room / executive studio; although more expensive they represent better value for...

An incredible and eclectic sight to behold! service and accommodation good. The hotel is also very close to some excellent eating spots and handily placed with a good super- market on the next block. Would recommend the hotelGreat for a Wellington site-seeing visit

This place is quirky. We knew this when we booked it, but it seems to be showing some signs of wear and tear.  There was a musty smell in the room and some mold in the shower grout.  Don't expect an ultra-modern, fresh from the showroom kind of place. Still it was a fun place to spend one night on a stopover, the location is great with the museum across the road and an easy walk to restaurants, shopping and the cable car.  The staff was helpful, assuming you could actually reach them. I tried by phone from my room several times and no one answered.  There was a crowd by the concierge desk at one point with no one answering the "ring for service" bell.  I would say the place was understaffed or operating under French labor laws.  The Internet in the lobby was free, but essentially nonfunctional.  Overall the place had positives and negatives,  fine on vacation when you are not in a hurry; on business this place would drive me nuts.

We stayed here for a couple of nights in the apartment/residential block behind the hotel building. I understand that sometime in the past this particular part of the hotel was moved (on wheels & at great expense) from its original location on the other side of Cable Street where it had mistakenly been originally located.
We were accommodated on the sixth floor, which is about as low as you can get to still get a harbour view, which we paid for. The top floor rooms are presumably for long-stayers.
The rooms are good with all amenities except complimentary wifi - why on earth can a hotel provide an expresso machine, washer/drier, microwave, etc., etc., and yet not run to an in-tariff wireless router???? I object to paying for in-room internet access in this day and age - it's cynical and uncompetitive of the hotel to charge for what has become an everyday utility. "Free" wifi service in the lobby was worth every penny (ie: pretty poor).
And I agree with previous reviewers that applying a 3% surcharge for paying by credit card is unnecessary and totally guest-unfriendly, but I've seen this elsewhere in NZ unfortunately.
There is some art work displayed around the hotel, generally quite innocuous, except the MV Agustas, which I personally like the look of. The hotel is a bit idiosyncratic and with reasonable service levels but without particular charm unfortunately.
The concierge guys were few and far between but very helpful nevertheless when you found one.
The bar was good, but we didn't stay to dine at the Hippopotamus restaurant although our friends did and reported positively, plus that it wasn't as expensive as anticipated.

Room Tip: See if you can get above the 6th floor on the residence/apartment block!

Thank you for your detailed revue of our hotel. . I want to address one issue you raised. Our charging for in-room Internet services. Our policy is to set fees which broadly cover our costs, in the same way we do for telephone services. We could include these costs in our tarrif but we feel that would disadvantage our many guests who don't use the Internet. Guests from overseas often don't appreciate the outrageously high prices we have to pay the Telcos for Internet services. As cost reduce, so do I reduce our charges. Presently these are among the lowest of hotels in Wellington.
We do offer free Wifi in the lobby, and following another guest comment have recently increased the speed of this dramatically. It just goes to show that tripadvisor reviews do have an effect.
