“Good tour hotel in the centre of things”
Reviewed January 29, 2009

We stayed here for a couple of nights on a tour of New Zealand.

The hotel has entrances on two levels - the shopping street 4 floor below accessed by lift, and lobby level where buses and taxis can drop off.

The hotel is well sited in the shopping area of Wellington about 2 minutes from the waterfront and surrounded by shops and restaurant in easy reach. The Wellington cultural museum, Te Papa, is only 10 minutes walk away (don't use a guide - they don't show you everything). We found the long and thin lobby, containing a cafe, a bit crowded, but we were given an orange juice at check-in whilst our cases were taken to the room.

The rooms are spread over more than one block, each of which is connected to the main block internally - ours was accessed by a glass sided bridge with a good view down the street.

The rooms are large enough to take 2 double beds as well as having a small sitting area. The bathroom was also on the compact size, but had a large bath which was unfortunately raised on a step above the floor. This step was slippery when wet and made us feel unsafe when getting out of the bath. Toiletries were plentiful and of good quality.

Cleaning standards are high and there is a free newspaper each weekday.

There are no views from the rooms, after all this is a high rise city!

We did not take breakfast in the hotel as there are plenty of good cafes nearby. We did however have dinner in the excellent Japanese restaurant in the hotel. This was of the type cooked on a hot plate and really good value.

Overall we had a good comfortable stay here with nothing to complain about other than the stupid bath..

We booked a Club room upgrade and were just delighted with everything that was offered. The room had superb views and was all you would expect from a top-grade room - bathrobes, slippers, flat screen tv, minibar, chocolates. But the best thing was access to the Club Lounge, a comfortable, quiet room, where snacks and drinks were available all day. At around 5pm an afternoon tea was served, with a range of sandwiches, fruit and a cheeseboard. Free internet access, and free local calls was also on offer in there. All of this, however, was surpassed by the breakfast that was served in there - it was just fabulous. We've never had a better hotel breakfast.

There isn't much else I can mention about the rest of the hotel, as we really just came in, and spent the time in our room or in the Club Lounge. The location is great, very central, as the lift takes you straight down to Lambton Quay. The staff were efficient and pleasant. We did have the buffet dinner one evening and again, no complaints.

I'm not sure when we'll be in Wellington again, but I would be very keen to try another James Cook in other cities we may visit. If they are all like this, we'll opt for this chain first. But have to stress, we'd opt for the Club level as this is what gave it the edge.

Booked through the local i-Site office in Wellington on a "COOL HOT DEAL" for a "Superior Room" and because it had secure overnight Valet parking but that would be extra. The experience started off bad. They had a sign for valet parking but you couldn't get near the entrance as it was also the entrance to a Car park which was blocked up with Taxis and people trying to get into and out of the car-park. We asked at the desk what exactly the "COOL HOT DEAL" package contained and we told by the person on the desk that they didn't know!!!!! So after asking them to check, they went and asked another person behind the desk who told them it included a buffet breakfast and a late checkout the next morning. So when we got up to the room the drinks cabinet was a shambles, Under the glass top was all stained with coffee or tea and the door was falling off.
The next morning we went to breakfast about a half hout before it was due to close. It was a buffet breakfast, but when we arrived, we were told it was closing soon, to please hurry.
We proceeded to get breakfast. Most items had not been refilled and the hot items were gone cold and stodgy.
As were waiting at the desk to check out, (only one person on) we spotted a flyer on the desk which detailed the entitlements of our package, and parking was included whoch they were trying to charge extra for.
Have just spent the week touring the North Island of New Zealand we were very disappointed that having paid the little extra for a so called nice hotel we were greeted with a run down shoddy hotel which needs a lot of work to to bring it a a level worthy of it's asking price. I would advise people to look elsewhere for a place to stay in Wellington.

I got a great deal through Agoda.com for this property at a little over NZ$100. Check in was friendly and smooth. This was the only hotel in NZ that I've stayed in that still has smoking rooms available, all be it in a different wing away from the health conscious. The room wasn't huge, and having two double beds in it didn't help matters, but with a little rearranging I made enough space to kick back and enjoy my room service meal and a few drinks in front of the smallish LCD TV (with plenty of options).

It was well under $NZ 20 taxi fare from the InterIslander Ferry from Picton, and not much over NZ$30 from the hotel to the airport.

Two of the six or so elevators in the foyer take you down to street level onto Lambton Quay and the city centre. The foyer bar was closed for the New Year break, and the hotel seemed quiet. The well stocked mini-bar is not cheap, the in house movie prices are outrageous at NZ$15 or so a pop.

Room service menu was quite comprehensive, and reasonably priced. I took a chance on the "Chef's choice" at NZ$28 and wasn't a bit disappointed by the tasty lamb rump which was offered up.

Location is very good, service is fine, room provides all the essentials. Early morning check-out was efficient but the chap at reception was obviously tired as he couldn't even manage half a smile, or a "have a nice day". All in all a good choice for Wellington accommodation.

  • Liked — Not having to go outside to puff a smoke.
  • Disliked — A bit cramped with two double beds (for a single traveller).

We stayed here for just one night on our way back down to the South Island over the 7's weekend. Really nice hotel, hotel lobby really nice. Check in was no problem, our room was very comfortable, nice size and bathroom okay. The James Cook is a really nice hotel, although as we were staying there over the 7's, it was very busy and the hotel was also the base for all of the rugby teams, a very nice perk. This did mean the bar was closed off when we were there which I felt restricted the hotel, especially as we were paying guests.
Overall, a nice comfortable hotel. Price is on the expensive side. I felt the location was a little bit too quiet at weekends as it is in business district.

I stayed here twice during a tour of NZ. The first time I booked a superior room, the second a standard room with a cheaper internet price. Both rooms were clean, tidy and large. Newly decorated and quite chic. I did not see a difference in the rooms despite different prices. On my first stay they made an error with the price so suggest you bring a copy of your booking.

Excellent location on Lamberton Quay.

Just spent four nights staying in a standard room which consisted of two double beds, desk, side chair, mini bar...etc the usual. Cant fault this hotel, you will get a good nights sleep, the staff are great, the bar in the lobby is pricey... eg beer x2 vodka and soda water x1 total $31 dollars. Might pay to drop into one of the many bars in town if you dont want to break the bank.

beds were comfortable, fridge wasn't too noisey, didn't hear the people next door, no street noise, clean rooms, modern and newly furnished. Free newspaper in the foyer.

Totally recommend staying here.
