“A good quality of accommodation”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 29, 2011

I stayed for one night and found the hotel to meet all my needs. I was complimentary upgraded from a king room to a one bedroom suite.

Bedding - A very comfortable bed with a very good quality of linen.
Bathroom- The room had a separate shower room and bathroom. There were ample towels of a very good quality.
The room - A spacious room with good heating. It was a nice surprise to receive a plate with complimentary apples. The view from the room though looked out to a car park building which obviously wasn't one of the better views from the hotel.

Overall I found the hotel very comfortable, in a very handy location, and the staff were more than willing to please and look after their guests.

The James Cook Hotel has a great lobby and polite staff that welcome you into the hotel. There is a bar/restaurant in the area too which is great for relaxing with a beer and engaging in a little people watching as hundreds of people everyday use the hotel as a shortcut to reach lambton quay. Unfortunately the rest of the hotel is a bit of a dissapointment. I stayed in two rooms during the week and both of them badly needed upgrading, especially the bathrooms. The room was not very clean and some of the furnishings were worn through and tired and the kind of furniture you would expect in a student dorm, not a hotel. The nightly rate is quite expensive for such tired rooms. The food is is average and quite pricy in the restaurant but there are plenty of great restaurants in the wellington area so no need to worry there. All in all, for the price, there are better hotels in 'welly' for a similar price which should enable you to get more bang for your buck.

Hi there, thank you for taking the time to write this review. I am pleased to hear our customer service standards were satisfactory. I am disappointed to hear about the standard of the rooms which you stayed in. We do try to maintain high standards and have a regular refurbishment plan in place. It is always good to receive feedback from our guests and I have taken into consideration your thoughts. I do hope you stay with us again in the future.

OK - I made the mistake of booking on the Rugby World Cup and I perfectly understand supply and demand, but when you jack the price up too much, then you're at risk that the product doesn't match expectations and that's what happened in this case.

This is a reasonably solid hotel for the work traveller, has everything you need (but expensive internet). Couples? the wife will be happy that its clean, sure, and great location? Absolutely,. ,she can put heels on and walk to the restaurant.. but is it worth more than NZ$150 a night? Probably not. If you get a good room rate, then this is a good place - otherwise, start checking your options. This is a large hotel and has the large hotel issues, the drunks at 3am having a loud conversation past your door in the weekend, the early risers banging about with their bags at 4am.. distant door slammings.. everything that goes with having a lot of rooms on every floor. Its not all the hotels fault, but it is directly related to the size of it and therefore, the rates need to reflect it as perhaps more economy/business than upmarket or exclusive.

Didn't try the food, can't comment, didn't like the shower pressure, but I did quite like the staff. They were attentive and friendly. Worth a go if you're tossing up a few options and don't avoid the place because of this review - but just be aware it's not quite the special place for a special occaision.

Stayed for a couple of nights in September 2011.

Superb location in the centre of Wellington close to the CBD, Cable Car and the Waterfront.

The concierge were very useful and found me a great value rental car for my time in town.

The breakfast was really good with loads of options including bagels and cream cheese.

Room was clean and comfy with a nice powerful shower and a flat screen TV.

Stayed for 2 nights to attend meetings, a return visit to the hotel. Why? Location, location, location augmented by helpful staff and relative afforadability - would be nice if Internet was a bit more reasonably priced, was NZ$29,30 for 24hrs ...It's located within walking distance to retail, business, leisure facilities and is an easy landmark for first-timers to the city. Rooms are comfortable, particularly liked the support pillows. There are public elevators to access Lambton Quay with a little cornor shop, sarnie cafe, sushi bar that's convienient to pick up essentials. And then it's an easy stroll to the waterfront restaurants and bars. The reception area is very comfortable and should you need a cab - relaibale service always! I'll stay here again when next in Wellington.

Room Tip: If it's a short stay take the 'cheaper' rooms - lots of space, no view but if it's a...

We stayed one night to attend the Wearable Arts Show at the TSB Arena, which was just a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel. We arrived in the morning and were very pleased to be told our room was ready for us. The room was tastefully decorated and very comfortable for me, my husband and adult daughter. Staff at reception, concierge and the restaurant were very helpful and pleasant. We were impressed with the full buffet breakfast which was included in our room rate. We left our bags at the hotel after checking out, as our flight was not leaving until the evening. On our return, the concierge was most helpful arranging a shuttle for us to go to the airport. We were more than happy with our stay at this hotel.

Room Tip: Room 1502 was quiet, and sunny. Even though you do look at another building, it was not close.
