“one night stay, no problem”
Reviewed April 26, 2010

arrival/check in/check out: quite a few flights of stairs no matter what way you are arriving. not a problem when walking around town, but when arriving/departing with lots of luggage, frustrating. friendly staff. let me keep my bags out back after i checked out, until 6pm. most appreciated, with a backpack, large suitcase, smaller road case and guitar.

room: standard room, queen bed. bigger than the usual travelodge. everything was clean, comfortable. bathroom a tiny bit small, but no problems. decent enough range of tv channels. had issues with my card getting in the building, which seems to be a recurring one for guests.

other: centrally located. no pool/sauna/gym amenities slightly disappointing, but i was aware of that.

We stayed here for a couple of nights and while the room was nice enough (exactly what you would expect from this kind of hotel) we had a few annoying problems with service and felt it was a bit overpriced. There was only ever one lift working and we had problems with our card trying to get into the back door out of hours. Also, and this is probably partly our fault, we thought breakfast was included. Particularly when we didn't have to say or note down whether we were having full or continental. Then when we checked out we were landed with an extra $100 for breakfast! $25 per head for muesli, hmm. Probably fine if you're on business but if you're on holiday I'm sure there are nicer places in Wellington.

I was very pleasantly surprised by the travelodge in Wellington. I got an extremely cheap rate and for this reason (as well as my impression that travelodge is a budget brand) I thought it might be a dump. It was the complete opposite. Very clean, modern, great location! For a few nights in Wellington it was perfect. I would recommend somewhere else for an extended stay as the rooms aren'y huge.

Two nights for a total of $210NZ including parking in a clean well maintained basic hotel with a helpful staff is hard to beat. If you don't have a car it is really reasonable. The only problem (minor) was that as you drive up you quickly see the sign but when you turn the corner it pretty much disappears. When you first turn onto Gilmer Terrace pull int the fist garage opening on you right. The room seemed somewhat larger than most Travelodges and it was well cleaned every day.

We stayed on the 21st floor and had a nice view of the harbor. The beds were very comfortable. The bathroom was clean and modern; everything worked well. I think the hotel had been renovated recently. Everything was new. The service was friendly and prompt. We arrived around midnight; the rooms were ready for us. Breakfast buffet was extra but very good. We were able to keep our luggage and car there for a few hours past checkout, which was very helpful since we had errands to run in town before leaving for our next destination. Parking was $20 per day, a good value for Wellington CBD. The hotel has one exit on Lambdon Quay near the Kelburn cable car, very convenient to food and shopping. It was a very short but pleasant visit. Next time we will stay for longer.

The hotel is located on the terraced part of Wellington. The room felt a little small but made up for it with excellent harbor views. Amenities include a refrigerator, microwave, hotpot for tea or instant coffee, and dishes and cutlery which helped us save on food costs. The location is perfect--it is in the middle of the main shopping area and within blocks of Te Papa Museum, the harbor, the Wellington Cable car, Parliament, just about everywhere you would want to go. We did not have a car so parking was not an issue.
The pedestrian entrance from Plimmer Steps (and you are on Lambton Qy) and lifts can only be accessed afterhours using the hotel card. It was raining quite a bit while we were there and the corridor leading to the lifts smelled a little musty.
I highly recommend this hotel.
