Mercure Wellington Central City Hotel and Apartments
Ranked #31 of 47 Hotels in Wellington

We would judge this "above average" for the good value we paid. We've stayed here a number of times and have always had a good experience.
Excellent rates and location in downtown Wellington- can walk anywhere.
They have 1 bedroom or 2 bedroom apts. If you want glitz and room service, this is NOT for you. But clean and comfortable. The one bedrooms are a bit small, but have beautiful views of the harbor. The bedrooms have queen beds. There are 2 kinds of 1 bedroom and the difference is in the kitchens. You either get a "separate" kitchen which is like a little closet- but has stove top, and a sink and fridge- but no microwave. The other 1 bedrm has the kitchen "area" as part of the small living room- no sink, but there is a microwave (and fridge). We found the microwave to be the most convenient. There are also different layouts for the 1 bedrooms. When we had the "separate" tiny kitchen, the bathroom was only accessible from inside the bedroom.
Not a great arrangement unless there are only 2 of you (which is probably recommended due to the size). When we had the microwave/kitchen area, the bathroom was directly off of the living room. The 2 bedrooms are MUCH larger, with a full kitchen and living room and 2 good size bedrooms. All of these look out over the back of the hotel. There are only 49 apartments, so it's small and on 17 floors- there are only 3 apartments on each floor. The staff is very nice here. There are loads of restaurants in the area and good shopping.

This hotel can be a little noisy (from street noise), so the higher up the better.

In November of 2002 I toured the north island of New Zealand by car alone and spent one night here. The hotel is beautiful, very modern looking and had a wonderful and cordial staff who went out of their way to make me feel safe and comfortable. I had picked up a local magazine which had a half price coupon so I actually paid only $48 for a great room that had a small fridge, microwave and all the amenities for making tea and coffee the next morning. It was well located in the middle of town and I was able to walk to most of the sites. I was only about 2 blocks from the aerial tram that took me up to the top of the mountain and the gardens that overlook the city. I would highly recommend this as a very nice place to stay.
