“Close to the city”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 7, 2013

The Kingsgate Hotel in Wellington is starting to show its age. The staff are very good but unfortunately the hotel needs some work to bring it up to a satisfactory standard. The standard of the meals left a little to be desired.

Room Tip: Corner rooms can be noisy when the wind is blowing.

Just had a night at Kingsgate Wellington which was great value for money and situated only a few minutes walk from the Airporter bus stop railway station and main bus station. The room had been refurbed recently and the bed was very comfortable.Would definitely come back again.

Had the pleasure of staying about 9 days..there were a few areas that they were touching up on, but the Hotel overall looked great! Location is good, there are shops, restaurants, banks, and the City Fitness center within walking distance.
Visitors should definitely try the food at the Glass House, Pizza's were delicious! The best thing though was the service provided by the awesome staff. Charissa, AJ, Ono, Monique, Parth, Jaime were very helpful!

Would definitely return again in the future!

Mr. Lee!

I booked a first night on the mystery deal with wotif , found it was the Kingsgate there in Thorndon ended up booking another three nights with them as they have really good deals with three night stays , couldn't say any thing negative ,we were upgraded to a larger room had great views . Really found location ideal did lots of walking , but also close to train and buses . The hotel booked a Taxi for us as we were catching the interislander again not to far from that terminal either . Would recommend this hotel .

Found and booked via www. The hotel was ok, rooms nice and clean, but a little wear was beginning to show. Internet in the rooms was slow and expensive, should be free for the guests. The restaurant was very good, prices reasonable, and food great. All in all a very good hotel for the business traveller or for starting a trip around New Zealand.

Dear Ole P,

Thank you for your feedback as it is appreciated. Since your stay we have repainted most of the rooms as well as making some other small changes. With regards to the internet we have replaced the previous provider and this has produced a far better product and we have noticed increases in speed and reliability. There is still a small charge for the Internet but we will be reviewing this in the future. Finally thank you about the positive comments about the restaurant. We are glad you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again in the near future.

Jeff Hermes

Got a deal off Grab One incl breakfast and late check out. Had 4 nights there recently on the 7th floor. Knew the room would be small and it was, but larger than one we stayed at in Singapore last month so we were happy. Quite a few toiletries provided, good size bathroom, good pressure on the shower. Comfy bed, adequate TV channels, tea/coffee making facs, desk in room. Asked for quiet room and had one on Thorndon side. Nice outlook. Breakfast was VG, great selection, liked the coffee machine which you can choose which sort you want. Location is great especially if you need to use the train or buses as 5 mins walk to the railway station. A New World supermarket just down the road. Staff were poilte and helpful. Complimentary newspaper. A lovely stay, thankyou.

Room Tip: Ask for the quiet side further up.

We thought really good value. We were offered a room on the 8th floor and I did not like the chemical smell of not sure what? so they kindly gave us Room 902 on the top floor with a king sized bed - fantastic views and very quiet and private.Room not large but for the price very good.
We happened to be there on the day of the Earthquake and on the 9th floor there was a certain degree of sway and after the After Shocks continued on Friday 14th August 2013 we asked if we could be shifted down some floors so the Hotel kindly allowed us to move to Room 203 - still a good room and with far less sway and much closer to the Exit!
So to summarise whatever we wanted the staff tried to accomodate including late check out.
They were also very friendly in the Bar and Dining Room and provided free wifi in those areas.
Great Location Super Market across the road/Railway and Bus Station down the Road and Great Water Front Walking just a little further.

Dear Tracey D,

We appreciate your comments on tripadvisor. Firstly apologies for the chemical smell. I am not sure how this would have occurred but most likely through the heavy hand of a staff member.

Secondly I would like to thank you about the positive feedback about the location of the hotel and the helpfulness of the staff in the mentioned circumstances. If it does put your mind at ease the hotel is certainly not graded as either being Earthquake Prone or Earthquake Risk.

Thank you again and we hope to you in the near future.
