Couldn't fault this hotel really. Great location - not far from the centre, but in a quiet location. Very friendly and helpful staff. Room was large, clean with a really comfortable bed and big TV. Breakfast was good and, although you pay separately for this - was good value. I would stay again.

I stayed at the Kingsgate Hotel Wellington for one night at the end of a week long business trip to Wellington in February 2013. The previous accommodation I had couldn't extend my booking for a night so I needed to move hotels.

The hotel was quite basic and a bit old but it was perfectly adequate. It was not luxury.
The room I had was quite large with a small bar fridge, kettle, hair dryer and bathroom products as you would expect. The bed was comfy but I was a bit surprised that it had no mattress protector on it. The pillows didn't have any pillow protectors either.

The bed was made up with flat sheets (including over the doona) and I always find this a bit tenuous - maybe I toss and turn more than others. The bed quickly came unmade. The bed was two singles pushed together and there was no padding over the central gap. If I'd been staying with my partner I wouldn't have been able to lie in the middle of the bed because of this gap.

The bathroom for my room was a disabled one, so had plenty of space. It would have been excellent if I was in a wheelchair. The room was an interconnecting one (although I didn't have the door open) so that would be useful for others traveling in family groups.

The hotel is located at the top of a hill near a large supermarket at the end of town that has the government buildings. It was a bit of a hike from the city centre but taxis were plentiful.

The room had no air conditioning and I needed to open the window because it was hot. It wasn't too noisy to do this in my room. The wifi was not free but it was available with a 24 hour charge of $10 - I don't know what the download limit was. I didn't bother using it as I was only there for one night.

A perfectly adequate hotel, not special. Clean but old.

We had an overnight weekday stay. It has a perfect location to government offices, embassies and the Parliament. It is very near to New World supermarket - perfect for your whatever you need. Advise: If you are a light sleeper, get a room that does not face the motorway as the noise can disturb you. My friend had to open her window to let the breeze come in during a warm summer night but the noise got in as well.

We had two nights in the Kingsgate and that was about fine. Rooms small, but clean and with everything you need for a few nights stay. Free wifi in the lobby was fine, but would have been better if we'd been able to get it in the rooms. Hotel short walk from Parliament and Lambton Quay, so pretty central

Room Tip: We had a room at the back of the hotel which faces the motorway. With windows open, it is a bit nois...

Had a weekend trip to Wellington with my girlfriend and booked a room at the Kingsgate Hotel in Thorndon. The suite was awesome, a great view of the hills, very spacious, and a bed that I wished I could take home with me. Watched movies on the perfect flat screen tv and enjoyed many a high-pressured shower. Breakfast was an absolute treat as well. Normally a buffet breakfast doesn't get my mouth watering, but this one certainly did. Fantastic bacon and eggs and real fruit juice. The location is fantastic, an easy walk into town and right next to a supermarket. Made my trip to the capital so much more enjoyable knowing I had somewhere perfect to come back to after all the partying.

This bed factory in the centre of Wellington's government quarter is really a missed opportunity. Well positioned, the building has potential and is reasonably well managed on a day to day given the poor state of the comfort offering. The rooms are awfully appointed - more akin to prison cells than hotel rooms. Spartan is the theme here, it is almost as if they have gone out of their way to make things unattractive. Bleak decor, hardly even a nod to making the guest feel comfortable, very, very basic. Mattresses slushy with no tension in the walls so I kept thinking I was going to fall out of bed. Mirrors in the bathroom away from the basin making it difficult to wet shave. But overall the total lack of any charm - refurbishment desperately need. Rant over, housekeeping is ok and the rooms are clean.
The Glasshouse (British army slang for prison - love the irony there!) Restaurant and Bar is a step up with pleasant views to the rear of the building. Staff were pleasant if under-motivated - we had to explain to the barmaid what a Bloody Mary was. Breakfast fine. Overall, fine for a one night stay if you can get a cheap deal but four nights was far too long a sentence.

Room Tip: Good luck, stay elsewhere.

First time trip to New Zealand to meet up with the other half and the outlaws and needed a place to stay in Wellington for four nights - and couldn't have picked a better place. Not really a tourist hotel but then it doesn't claim to be. Easy to find, close to the centre of Wellington on the edge of the parliament district and close to the cathedrals, both old and new. Friendly staff ensure a good welcome, there's a good "no fuss" registration procedure and you are made to feel very welcome. My room was on the top floor - a smallish double - impeccably clean and very well presented, complete with a iron and ironing board in case you took advantage of the laundry facilities in the basement, which I did. Good, well stocked bar introduced me to the delights (and I do mean delights) of NZ brewing and the food in the restaurant was well cooked, well presented and a reasonable price. All in all, a nice, quiet hotel with lovely staff, a comfortable bed and the location was ideal for exploring the city on foot. Good value for money and heartily recommended, I would be more than happy to stay there again.
