“Great evening with friends over some craft beer and pies”

Owner description: Hashigo Zake is New Zealand's most single minded beer outlet - defiantly excluding the bland, the boring and the industrial and only serving beer, wine, sake and whisky that our staff and regular customers get excited about. If any of that is a problem, Wellington has plenty of other outlets willing to take your money. But if you want an ever-rotating range of great drinks, brutally frank advice from knowledgeable staff, free wifi and a warm, welcoming environment, step out of the chaos above ground into our basement bar.

One of the friends we were travelling with is related to one of the owners so we went to see what he had bought into. What a great place. The people behind the bar were extremely knowledgeable and recommended some very tasty and interesting beers to try. The pies they serve there as well were utterly delicious. The goat pie, thai pork pie and venison vindaloo were fantastic. We would recommend this place to anyone looking at trying something different for an evening in Wellington.

Okay only one beer each. My wife though declared the Lobethal GoodBier as the best beer so far for 2012, and that is good enough.

After walking around in the wind and rain we hopped in a cab and, though we forgot the exact name, the driver knew where we meant after describing it. We walked downstairs into the dark and cozy room. With about a dozen options, it was tough to pick a beer but I settled on a porter (not my first choice since they had just run out!) and my husband went for a pilsner.

There are a couple rooms with a fair bit of seating. The music is along the indie lines and they even list the song on the TV menu.

Overall, it's a neat place but we found 2 other craft beer pubs in Welly that we liked more. The pilsner was on the warm side, which we should have asked about because I think it would have been much nicer cold. My porter wasn't too bad, but after a mini-tour of 3 pubs with 6 beers sampled, these two were probably the least favorites. Not the fault of the pub really since they don't brew them but unlucky picks for us.

We would likely come back if we were in this part of town again. Since the menu changes, you never know what you might find!

A small bar with huge beer flavours - malt, hops.....A must visit & return regularly.....Dominic has done his homework & is catering for the growing population who demand great beers.

Down to the basement of 25 Taranaki St was the small bar with best beer ever in Wellington. As my friend was not sure which kind of beer he should order, the lady asked some questions and gave the trials to him to ensure he could order the right one. The service here was so good. I would definitely be back here.
