“Nice hotel - very expensive (and poor) Internet though”
Reviewed July 8, 2011

Very clean hotel, friendly staff and lots of local info. Great place to stay were it not for the very expensive and appallingly unrleliable Internet connection in the room - for $25 per day it struggled to reach 400Kb, so well less than you would pay for a month in most of the world ... for one day. Internet should be free everywhere as it is in most of the US as a VERY basic utility. Apart from that it was good value for money.

Room Tip: Look for cheap Internet elsewhere.

I had a pleasant overnight stay at the Bay Plaza Hotel. The staff were courteous and efficient, the room was well laid out with a nice little view. The interiors looked as if they had been recently updated in a pleasant but not extravagant manner. The car park at the back was in the open air and initially the front office staff wanted to charge an additional $15 for an overnight park - however they skipped the $15 when I said I would just park on the street.

The bed and pillows were just right - neither too soft or too firm. The room dimensions were also good - all bases covered in terms of amenities, with sufficient room to move around without feeling cluttered.

I like sleeping in a room with fresh air - and was pleased that guests had the option of opening the windows. The curtains were well insulated and effective in blocking out the city lights and morning sun - so an easy place for an extended sleep in. I was on the fifth floor and the evening and morning rush-hour traffic noise was surprisingly quiet - even with the window ajar.

I only had a short stay - arriving late at night and leaving in the morning - so I did not check out the other amenities of the place. You can have a variety of breakfasts at the hotel or else wander to one of the many cafes in Wellington CBD. Check out and check very quick and efficient.

Room Tip: The higher up the room the better the outlook.

Older hotel with traffic noise unless you are on the 9th floor and up with the fire station next door! You can also hear your neighbours in the bathroom. It is in good location to walk to the city centre and attractions and is across the road from a supermarket. They had maintenance issues while we were there with exhaust fans noisy through vents in the bathrooms, after not sleeping the first night we were moved to another room higher up. Don't pay full price, we got a package with breakfast included. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Make sure you are on 9th floor or up

There was definately the worst hotel we stayed at in New Zealand on our two week holiday, the only good thing was we were only there for one night. Our room was not ready at 2pm for check in and we had to wait, our room when finally ready was small, outdated and not particularly clean. The worst part was the noise, our room was next to the elevator which obviously was overdue for a service because the noise it made was horrendous. Also it must have the thinest walls of any hotel as you could hear noise clearly from every room around you, especially when anyone turned on the shower. After a sleepless night we couldn't wait to get out of there. The only positive was the location but there are a lot of other hotels in the area so not really a selling point,

The stay was very comfortable are the staff is very helpful and friendly.
The hotel is situated at a very convinient location and there are number of eateries at a 5 mins walk which is very helpful. Many places of interest as well as station are nearby. I totally recommend this hotel for stay at Wellington. All in all a very memorable and nice experience

We had booked a group of 8 to stay at this hotel. We were put on different floors and none of us had a view! Our room was in need of a decent clean. The dust was awful, mirror in bathroom had not been cleaned and when we had a shower and the bathroom steamed up you could see words that someone had written previously on mirror! My husband had to walk sideways to get into his side of bed as gap between wall and bed was about 40cm. Very old TV, old drawers in wardrobe to put clothes in. This hotel is VERY dated and in need of refurbishment. We don't mind staying in basic hotels but we do expect them to be clean.

If you are going to Wellington stay at the Bay Plaza. Perfect location very close to Te Papa & city centre. A bit of noise - it's a city - but couldn't really fault it. Excellent value, good room, great view. Even a supermarket opposite.
