The check-in staff leaves something to be desired. They put us in a room with a view of some neighboring buildings although we had a reservation for a water view room. Happily, wonderful Christopher, of the bell staff was able to phone down from the wrong room and after my conversation with the front desk, he took us to the correct room. Our water view was lovely and the lights of the city at night were wonderful. We were able to walk everywhere from this location. Te Papa is a short walk away. Internet access was ridiculously expensive. For the price of the room it should have been free.

The view of Wellington Harbour and Oriental Bay is comprehensive and beautiful! Plus, wherever you are, in your room, the bar, or the restaurant, the view is still there.
Lots of glass; a bright, open hotel, right across from the bay.
The rooms are amazingly quiet, the bathrooms elegant.
It is 3 blocks from Courtney Place, where all the action is, and 5 blocks from Te Papa, the national museum.
The breakfast buffet is excellent, with special orders accepted.

This place a very well located hotel on the lovely Oriental Bay. It has a cool bar/restaurant about half way up, great views of the city.

Restaurant was okay, bar was great place to relax with big armchairs.

Rooms spotless, warm and well appointed.

I had stayed at this hotel a couple of years ago and was looking forward to going back. Last time I was in a Bay View Room.
This time I was put in a Vista Room (Room 923). This was a disappointment. Although the view over the city and harbour was good the bathroom was extremely small and only had a shower, no bath. The recliner chair in the room was faded and there was no air-conditioning. Although the compendium stated the room had 20 mins free wireless internet per day, this was not the case. Internet is outrageously expensive and hopelessly slow - not much better than dial up! Don't waste your money signing up for this service. There is 20 mins per day of free wireless internet in the lobby and the speed of this was OK.
The bed was comfortable but pillows could have been better.
The biggest let down was the drunken group of people making a noise and smoking on the deck below my room on the first evening of my stay. Despite three calls to reception this noise went on till after 11 PM. The hotel is a non-smoking hotel so it was very disappointing to see non-enforcement of the policy.
Breakfasts were average for this kind of establishment.

Room Tip: Get one of the better Bay View Rooms.

We arrived there after a very late flight to be greeted at reception by the night staff who couldn't tell his left from his right. He gave us directions to the room saying "turn right" which got us lost and when we finally found our way back to reception I asked if he meant turn right when he was pointing left and he realised he was giving us back to front advice. Just what we didnt need at 2am. The room was stuffy and has no air con so you have to open the windows and get all the street noise from the delivery trucks. Very disappointing after reading the reviews here but would have to agree with Chase_Mollys review and advise people to isist on staying in the newer part of the building as it might make a difference.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front in the newer part - rooms at the back have no aircon and limited views.

If you want to splash out on a more expensive location in Wellington City then the Copthorne Oriental Bay is very nice. It has stunning views of the city by day and the city lights at night. The restaurant food is very yummy. There is a heated pool so bring your swimming togs/bathing costume. The location is literally a few minutes walk from Te Papa and shopping...you are right onteh waterfront esplanade, so bring walking shoes and go out for a walk. The downside? Not much wrong with it except many other places are also "nice" and much less costly.

Room Tip: Some balconies are not private (shared with many rooms) so be clear what you want.
