“An intriguing Wellington experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2013

The ferry from Queens Wharf isn't cheap ($23 adult return), but a visit to Matiu/Somes Island is otherwise free.

Take your own food and drink as there's nowhere to purchase these on the Island. You will start with a briefing by the Dept of Conservation rangers, who will ask you to search your bag for rats. A circuit walk around the small island takes 90mins or so if you stop to see the viewpoints and sights. There are great views of the city, you will see tree weta and kakariki (red-crowned parakeets), and you may sight a tuatara. The buildings at the top include posters about the island's history.

We saw most of the island's sights in 2 1/2 hours. For the real experience, you can book a hut (via Dept of Conservation) and stay overnight. You might even see the little blue penguins...

“Excellent trip for all ages”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 6, 2013

A most enjoyable trip for our group of 8 people, all ages, 9-62 years of age. From the boat trip there and back to the talk by the conservation officer and the walk around the island and buildings, this whole experience was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Excellent toilet facilities and places for lunch. The talk by the conservation officer on the island at the beginning was very informative and the whole group found something of interest in this. We all found the extra information provided by him at different points around the Island again most interesting and informative.Wouls recommend to all and don't rush your time spent there.

“Unspoilt and well protected”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2013

Paddled out there in kayaks from petone . Great experience to paddle right around it looking at the unspoilt cliffs and little islands. Nice change to take photo's in reverse looking back at Wellington and the Hutt Valley.

“Quite surprising”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2013

We can see Matiu/Somes from our house, but had never ventured over until Dec-12, when we hired one of the cottages with friends. I was very surprised by all the history associated with the island and had a great 24 hours exploring. Would visit again.
