Always nice to step ashore on an Island :)
Soames has some nice history, good walks and great views - on a nice day !
Maybe just me but in this day and age one feels in any other country it would feature a nice restaurant - however it is very natural so take your own snack and drinks.
About 2 hours is enough to walk around and tire kids out.

It has some interesting history and is now a really nice place to spend a morning/afternoon wandering through the bush and listening to the birds - there's not much out here so it's a step away from the city! And the ferry ride's cool too.

Such an interesting island to visit on a nice day. Great views of Wellington, the harbour and Hutt Valley. Prolific birdlife. Take a picnic and explore the historic island which has been a quarantine station and a prisoner of war camp in its day.

After living in Wellington for over 30yrs, I finally visited Matiu / Somes Island in Wellington Harbour. The history of the island was interesting, with some great scenery and flora and fauna. The weather was kind and got some awesome shots of Wellington city from a different angle.

Soames Island is in the middle of the harbor. A short boat ride gets you there. Walking around the island (literally) is really bracing. It has been in the care of the Dept of Conservation and has been cleared of pests and then repopulated with native lizards. It was a prison/internment camp during the World Wars and there are graves from that time. It was also a quarantine station Nd the building date from that.
There is a steep walk up from the boat but it is a good paved path.
