“Historical reminder”

Hard to believe that the Wahine foundered so close to the beach nearby. Easy to walk around memorial artefacts and pay respects to those who lost their lives.

“Great place for a walk and coastal views”
Reviewed January 20, 2012

Churchill Park runs along the shore at Seatoun. There’s a bit of beach, but the most noteworthy feature is the Wahine memorial, commemorating the sinking of the inter-island ferry in 1968. There is a nautical themed sculpture overlooking the spot offshore where the vessel foundered, and an anchor salvaged from the vessel.

There is a path along the coast which goes past a number of small, mostly gravel beaches which seemed popular for fishing and kayaking. The view through Wellington Heads to Cook Strait was excellent, quite wild-looking. The park also has a really good children’s playground. If you’re out in the Eastern suburbs, this would be a lovely spot to visit on a fine day.
