The day I wanted to do the harbour ferry the weather was a bit rough in the harbour so the ferries were cancelled but no notices were up on the boards advertising the trips to say that nor in the shop where you bought the tickets from – simply a ‘closed’ sign on the door!

However, I struck it lucky in that there was a worker who needed to get to Matiu/Somes Island and I managed to go on the (rough) journey that took her across. Unfortunately the sea was a bit too rough to get the pictures that I really wanted to take but it was certainly an experience none the less!

Well after 30 years we finally jumped on the ferry for an afternoon return harbour trip. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute and will do it again soon but get off at the island and Days Bay making a whole day of it. Its one of Wellingtons lost attractions not helped by the advice notice to obtain tickets at the shop which was closed as we found out later you pay on board so WHY NOT SAY SO IN THE WINDOW?

A much more interesting way to go to work that battling the traffic on the motorway. Travelling by sea can be beautiful.

Wonderful way to experience the Wellington waterfront scene with out having to drive into town. Leave the car at Day's Bay,catch the ferry and have lunch in town or visit Somes Island..All for free on the Gold Card if travelling within the restricted hours

This is the best way to get over to the other side of the harbour, with stunning views of the harbour on the way. You can enjoy a glass of wine or a beer out on the observation deck, or take in inside.
The ferry stops at Somes Matiu Island in the middle of the harbour, on selected crossings (check the timetable on the website).

Days Bay is the ultimate destination of the ferry, a nice little beach with a few lovely little cafes and access to beautiful bush walks in East Harbour Regional Park. A good place to bring kids to run around on the beach or kick a ball around in the park. Bring your swimming togs on a sunny day!

One word of caution, check the timetables and watch the time, otherwise you might have to take the bus home if you miss the last ferry (the bus stop is right next to the dock, so it's easy enough to get back to the city this way, it just takes 3 times as long).

The ferry is a commuter service so has more frequent crossings at the beginning and end of the work day. You board the ferry at Queens Wharf in Wellington (outside Waggamama). find a seat, then once the ferry is moving a conductor will come around and sell you a ticket. You can pay by debit or credit card, or cash. It is cheaper to buy a return ticket than 2 one way fares. You can take bicycles with you and maybe bike out to the Pencarrow lighthouse, or rent them in Days Bay. You can also rent kayaks etc in from the shed by the wharf in Days Bay.
