Did the crossing on a calm and sunny day so spent a good part of the time on the outside deck enjoying the views which could almost compete with those of Milford Sound. Was lucky enough to spot some penguins, and a small pod of dolphins that followed the ferry for a while. Bought a decent light meal in one of the cafeterias. Nothing to complain about! This is definitely the best way to travel between the islands as a tourist... if the weather is not too bad.

Plenty of seating and pretty comfy apart from when the seas are rough! But the views are incredible so make sure you have your camera ready! Waking the decks to get fresh air is also great

A very pleasant crossing with great facilities and friendly staff. Plenty of variety in seating. Beverages, movies, open decks and closed decks too. Lots of people but plenty of room

The day we crossed from one to the other island the crossing was very rough - which we are told happens quite often on this crossing, people were being ill , it was horrendous.
Of course the weather can not be helped so the boat was great, lots of eateries , cinemas ect but we could not explore too much.
I would imagine on a good day this is a lovely trip but check the weather first.....

Hi 123eatsandtreats,

Like any sea crossing, there are occasionally bad days - and people do have a tendency to exaggerate! It is only southerly winds (from the south) that cause swells - so while the weather can be bad with strong winds, the sea can remain quite calm. And for the hour cruise within the Marlborough Sounds, the weather is almost always calm.

Anyway, we are glad you enjoyed the facilities and we hope the staff we helpful with ice and other remedies!

All the best,

Robin | The Great Journeys of New Zealand

We chose to travel over land and sea to Wellington from Christchurch, rather than fly. A morning Bus from Christchurch dropped us at the gates of Interislander at Picton. The check in and wait for boarding the ferry was smooth and a good break as the complex has a cafe and other facilities on site. The Ferry itself is beautiful, well laid out cafes and restaurants on-board, with multiple options to sit inside move around or hang out outside for photo ops or simply soaking in the Sun. Great views as the ferry leaves the tip of South Island and later when you approach Wellington.

Hi jotinders4,

We are really pleased you enjoyed our incredibly scenic route instead of flying. Next month the Coastal Pacific train returns, which will make the journey from Christchurch even better - so we hope you'll get a chance to enjoy that too one day.

Enjoy the rest of your travels!

Best wishes,

Very smooth and efficient loading and unloading process. Great outdoor areas if you don’t want to sit inside. Several places to get a drink or a bite to eat

We took the ferry over with our car. It was a comfortable trip over the South Island without any headaches. The wifi is very spotty so download something on Netflix before getting on board but don't forget to take in the views of Marlborough Sound!

Hi mmaarraaa,

Great tips! Yes, there is no broadband cable connecting the ship to the Internet. So we have to use the same technology used in mobile phones - which can be slow and patchy. Definitely worth having some Netflix content preloaded, but two of the three hours are immensely scenic - so those that are not doing the trip again should definitely spend time outside soaking up the views!

Thanks for travelling with us and taking the time to leave such good advice for fellow travellers!

Great facilities and food on board. The free shuttle and check in was all very well organised and the staff were very friendly and efficient.

Went round trip during our NZ trip first from North to South Islands, then back from Picton to make our way back to Auckland. It was easy and convenient. I was a little surprised how difficult it was to walk on that large a ship -- walking to the different areas of the ship like we were drunk. They show a movie if people want to pass the time that way, and there are premium lounges and sleeping quarters for those who want them. We got basic passage (had to turn in our rental and pick up a new one on each trip) and just read or snoozed. About 3 hours for each trip. As mentioned in some other reviews, food is not one of the strengths of the line. Pretty much like cafeteria food. Either bring your own, or have low expectations.

Hi letrips66,

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. The food court is a cafeteria serving economic food for a broad audience. The Plus Lounges and Hectors Cafe bars serve a more premium range of food.

We hope you enjoyed New Zealand!

Easy booking ticket through online. Journey with passengers and vehicle are smooth. The passenger decks and cafes are comforted.
