When you rent a car in New Zealand on one island you leave your car there and take the Interisland Ferry to the other and pick up a new car on your same rental contract, very efficient. We enjoyed the ferry ride, beautiful scenery, too bad the windows were so dirty, it was almost impossible to take photos through them.

If you are considering taking any note from this review you have to bear in mind what our expectancy was linked to comments about our actual experience.
Firstly we were travelling from the UK - expectancy factor is quite low, a ferry if for transporting passengers and vehicles as conveniently as possible , not a holiday cruise. Secondly, we were on a four week holiday so our mood was probably better than passengers using the ferry for commercial or short trip reasons.
The views from the ship were fabulous - more interesting than others e.g. Doubtful Sound - and the normal boring views of open seas. These were helped by friendly NZ passengers who upon realising you were touring would give an interesting historical and geographical commentary of the scenery.
Our check in early in the morning was both efficient and friendly. We had pre-booked the lounge area and found the furniture whilst a little cramped very relaxing and enjoyed the included breakfast. Just before arrival, scones were also served by a very friendly staff.
The lounge includes free wi fi and it was interesting to listen - you could not help it - to the amount of passengers on Face Time to their families in the UK. The wi-fi did go down at one point but the staff very quickly came round the lounge with a new access number.
I also took a walk around the ship and was surprised to see the amount of seating, food outlets bars and there was even a small group playing live music in one of the bars.
Other TA reviews have mentioned that the areas are a bit shabby. I would agree with this but as mentioned before, this is a mode of transportation - not a cruise ship.
I would repeat my title and would defiantly use again as the trip was too short to take in all the views.

We were booked on a 8.30 sailing on the Interislander travelling from the Manawatu to Wellington early that morning to meet our sailing. There was soooo much roadworks and traffic that we were going to be late for the 7.30am check in. By 8.15am when we had not yet arrived at the ferry we received a cell phone call to see where we were. That was just soo cool!! We were then only three minutes away but were panicking. Thank you Interislander for this checking system, you saved our day and our daughters trip south to University!!

Staff were fast and efficient but still warm and very friendly even though it was us that was late. It was a picture perfect days sailing and an awesome crossing.

Awesome team Interislander!!

Not a very good experience. The last time we went on the Interislander we found it vey good (6 years ago), this time we were so not impressed. Although the scenery was wonderful the ships coud not live up to the same. Both our ships were shaby and very dirty - was careful where we sat. The food on offer was unhealthy, greasy, dried up and generally unappetising to look at to say the least. Take your own food reccommended. The staff were scruffy, looked like they could do with a wash and unfriendly with a 'can't be bothered' attitude. The toilets on our return ship were unclean and very hard to manouvre in, even for a small person. We will never book or recommend this company again. We may try one of the others or fly next time. All in all, it is a very bad advert for tourists coming to N.Z. A real let down.

A wonderful way to cross between the two islands - which I have done many times with overseas visitors and definitely recommended IF you enjoy being on the water, lovely varied coastal scenery, seeing dolphins play in the waves, sea breezes in your hair ...

BUT not if you want to sleep and just get there.
Also not if food, dining are important for you- I am always happy to wait for when I arrive in Picton where there are many choices of excellent cafes and restaurants available and preferred to spend my time on deck and enjoy the trip.
But yes disembarkation at Picton could have been better this time - presumed that was tempory
