Review of St James Theatre

Worth a visit just to see the interior alone. Cherubs, roses, ribbons, drapery, chandeliers, statuary - all a symphony in cream and gold. My only issue with the theatre was that the seating was very uncomfortable, I was in mild discomfort within about 45 minutes and sad that this marred my enjoyment of the performance somewhat. The foyer area looks to have been modernised and does not have the same embellishments as the theatre interior but is still a very welcoming space.

Some buildings in Wellington are just so much a part of "the establishment" that people and passers-by just don't notice them any more. The St James Theatre is one such building. It's beautifully maintained and easy to find along Courtenay Place - it's architecture is lovely. It's worth taking the time to really look at it - both inside an out. The facade is inviting and once inside you'll be transported to another era - it's great..

Recently went to see Swan Lake here by Royal New Zealand Ballet and I was surprised to see how beautiful the architecture was, the theatre was spacious and did not feel crowded at any point. My seat was in the last row of the stalls but it did not feel far away and I still had an excellent view of the stage. Staff are very friendly and a decent bar/cafe. Go see an event at the St. James, it will be a guaranteed worthwhile experience!

Have just got home from watching the Phantom of the Opera at the St James Theatre. What a disappointment. Not the show, not the scenery, orchestra or anything to do with the staging of the show but rather the fact that drunk people were allowed in and were raucously singing during all the best songs in the first half. I made my views known to them and the ushers and to be fair they did quite down (somewhat) but then in the very last scene they reverted to type and spoilt that too and when told so they thought it was funny. I was and am not amused. Staff should not readmit people who have obiously had too much to drink.

Visited Wellington to see the Phantom of the Opera. First visit to this theatre. Great to be able to eat at the café within the theatre before the show - made for a very relaxed, stress-free experience. Good food, good service. Looking forward to the next visit.
